OK I got an SKS many months ago and never got around to using it much, but here my story goes.

In the summer I took the gun out to the range to test fire. The first 5 shots slamfired, then the 6th was misfire. I have since tinkered with the gun to try and get the thing working without success. Recently I have discovered that the entire barrel has sild forward.

Does anyone know how to fix a sliding barrel? Or should it go back to the seller? This one was bought through lever arms.

There was an issue with the original batch of new Lever SKSs. The hybrid threaded/pressed barrel pin was too small and the barrel slid forward. Call them and then take it back to Lever and they will fix it for you.

Cheers

"6th shot". all guns/mags only hold 5 shots. I don't know what your talking about.... don't say that again, you'll only bring the $hit down on your head. just a friendly reminder from one nut to another. but as to your problem, yours is not the first barrel levers had to fix, they should be pretty good about it.

cheers,
BCtrigger

If you got it from Lever they will repair it for you or send you the pin to fix it yourself. I believe the ones from lever had the serial number 040######. I asked about this issue before I bought mine throughthem and I was assured that all of their staock had been re-fitted with the new pin. I bought mine last march. I guess you got an earlier one or they missed yours. Give them a call and they can help you out.

Yeah, lever are pretty good to deal with. Take it back to them, that's a pretty serious problem, its a good thing you were on the ball enough to notice it, there are people who definately wouldn't have, and probly would have ended up making a real mess.

Same thing happened to me with a brand new Lever sks #040###x. It shot well at first, then started to misfire every other shot. On inspection, the barrel wasn't seated to the recceiver properly and caused excessive headspace probs and resulted in lightly struck primers and failure to fire. You could see the op rod spring thru the housing. We figured the barrel was not put on right in the first place as I only had shot a handful of rounds thru it. Lever replaced it with another one which was picked by the gunsmith and I ended up with a rifle with the best feeling trigger out of five of them and it digests ammo with gusto and never burps! Lever was pretty good about it as I left the store in twenty minutes with a new toy. Check to see if you see the op rod spring thru the housing, this is an indication that the barrel is too far away from the receiver. PS this rifle was bought in the summer of 05, so the prob could still be present. Check each rifle as quality control is a little shabby. There are some old threads about this on this forum

I've got an SIR SKS in the same range, and I have a suspicion the barrel may be creeping forward, as I too can see the op rod spring and what might or might not be an increasing gap between barrel and reciever, is there any way to check? Mine is in the 040 range and only has 2 pins on the barrel...

well,if you find you're having more failure to fire than normal, this could be a headspace problem. The greater distance from the receiver to the barrel will result in softly hit primers and no bang. Seeing the spring thru the housing isn't good! Mine had no sign of a creeping barrel but just installed wrong to start with. Pete

I had a look at your pics, that is EXACTLY how mine looks. I never noticed the gap until fairly recently, although I have no FTF's yet. I wonder if I should try and twist SIR's arm for a new rifle now, or wait untill it starts to give me some real problems...

well, I bought the rifle in the summer and brought it back in the fall. Tell SIR that Lever did the honourable thing and replaced the rifle because it was a safety concern. Maybe you can embarrass them into it. And if yours looks like mine, then yes you have a problem
