:D Well, friends of mine borrowed my legendary SKS for moose hunting. But of course they have their powerful .300 and 30-06 with them too. But one of them was determined to test the limits of an SKS. To keep up my SKS legend, I loaded a bunch of 125 gr Hornady SPs with 25.5 gr Reloader 7.

Oh, let your flame out, boys!

ANY bullet in ANY cartrdge will kill ANY game, if doine right.

The 30-30 is oft menioned as a minmum cartridge. The 7.62x39 i s NOT a 30-30.

Could I kill a moose with an SKS? Bet your ass I could. Is it a *stunt* ? U huh.

Will a sks meet my criteria for hunting? No way.

My criteria for huntingin is:

A cartridge, using a bullet, that willkill properly EVERYTIME whether every thing goes correctly or poorly.

An sks does not fit this criteria. I hope your buddy is an expert, that can place his bullet properly , form close range, and not a beginner.

ahhahahahahahahhha hehehehehehehehehe...............

Cough cough

moose with an SKS ? WTF ?
are they even accurate enough to put the bullet somewhere in the killzone?

SKS might be like a 30-30 but that wouldnt been my first choise for BC moose.

Plus as Signguy said does it even group well enough for hunting purposes ?? Just because it was "Good" for the Soviets doesnt mean it can shoot. :p

SKS will work... Not my choice though... M305/M14 would be a better option... Let's hear some of the legends your rifle has...

Cheers

I kind of agree with Gatehouse.... sounds like a stunt when more appropriate rifles are available. No doubt it could work, but the moose deserves better.

If you could get a 150g bullet designed for the 30-30 out of that rifle at 2100fps with good accuracy then have at all the moose you want. The only problem with the average 7.62x39 load on large game is it's very low sectional density bullets (123g bullets). It may, or may not, make it to the far lung of a moose.

I know for sure that the 123g Winchester Power Point will make it to the off side of a small dear though.

I've chronied 30-30 loads out of a 336/18.5." It's only making ~2000 fps, nowhere NEAR the advertised numbers. I've also chronied 7.62x39 150gr SP's out of an SKS, and they measure 2100fps.

Therefore, one could say that an SKS is actually superios (power-wise) to a 30-30 carbine. And no one will debate the fact that 30-30 carbines have accounted for a lot of game.

But so have 22lr's, and I don;t think you'll find many people claiming that's an appropriate round...

:) I know from my experience that a factory 123gr will pass through a deer or a small/mid sized black bear at 100 yards with no problem.

Is your buddy a 10yr old girl that can't handle recoil:p

Canoe paddle.....snicker

What make of bullet by the way? ooooops never mind. Missed it the first time. Must need glasses LOL

I've seen the sks used on a cougar, full metal jacket through the heart and lungs, huge exit wound and wound channel, if you hit a rib the bullet will blow up quite nicely just don't try any long shots :)

sks

I'll say it again...........the sks is junk. You have a better chance of killing a moose with a spear or a good size rock. I guess if your close enough and you have a 30 round mag and dump the whole works into the poor critter......what an ultra maroon.
