When i got my sks the only mag it had with it was a 30/5rd magazine which i believe is an ak47 mag. It locks into the weapon but falls out when shooting bcuz its worn on its clipping points. I got a couple tapco 20/5rd mags and thot they would work but they dont seem to fit.

Am I doing something wrong?

weapon specs:
chinese norc (mc-5d)??
the rear locking point is in a different spot....why is that and what will fit and work reliably???

you bot the wrong mag, the tapco mag is for a regular SKS , not interchangeable with AK mag . yours uses AK mag.

lets try to fix what you have before buying any more mag. i dont know what clipping point you are talking about so a pic of it would be helpful.

Curtton is correct, you have an sks-d model that takes ak47 mags. The tapco mags you bought are for regular sks rifles.

With all the Russian sks rifles expected to be landing here (sometime), there will be someone looking for the Tapco mags to "Bubba" their Russian...

Cheers

To insert a mag in a "D" model SKS you have to pull back the bolt and hold it open, then insert and lock the mag. Try this little trick. The Tapco, as mentioned above is for a regular SKS.

Just a question JSP? Does your SKS have a paddle mag release or a pull back release? I've heard of problems with the pull back release as it tends to move around on recoil resulting in the mag being released. Your problem may not be the mag, it could be the mag release design.

I have that problem with mine. A couple times firing the mag has fallen out. Is there a fix for it?

I've found a real lack of consistancy on the duck-bill mags. One of mine was falling out during firing because the front "duck-bill" clip was slightly shorter and worn. I tagged on a thin bit of metal (I can put up photos if someone wants) and now it's fine. I've got a stove-pipe fix too.

bubba a russian SKS ... blasphemy .:D

we have established that in a "D" or "M" , need not hold your bolt back when putting in the mag bcos the bottom of the bolt are mod.

Not sure. I guess you could try to find a stiffer spring to fit behind the release.

we need pic .
i think his mag catch is the regular SKS type and not the AK type, if thats the case then he may have a weak spring but you dont want a stiffer spring bcos its the same spring that is used for the sear ofcos a stiffer spring would make pulling the trigger a bugger.

circles in the picture are the two "clipping points" that the mag clips into the weapon. Both are worn badly and are probably the cause/contributor for it falling out.

My best option for a new mag is just another ak mag??
Wheres a good place to pick one up?

no i havent....i will give that a try next time in up at the cottage and report back

For the guys that need to hold the bolt open to insert the mag you should look very closely at your bolt. The SKS-D and non-D models have a different bolt where the bottom "rails" are chopped off to avoid this. Check the bottom of your bolt to confirm.

You should also check your mags to ensure that you can only fit 5 rounds but that it does have some "play" that you can press on the cartriges, but not enough to be able to load a 6th round. To check for this is very easy, does it happen if you load 4 rounds, or only if it's filed to 5 ? If so you would have to slightly grind the follower or modify mag somehow (fairly easy).

If not the mag, me thinks you either have the wrong bold or might need to grind the rails off the bottom of the bolt.
