sks mag problem - piks to show

Don't have my SKS-D anymore, but when I did I also had the problem of having to insert the mag while holding the bolt open (struck me as rather risky). Had several people attempt to do it the "proper way" with no luck. I wonder how the new owner made out...

Rotation...

There's just a way to insert a mag into a "D" or an AK: you have to insert the front part of it in the mag well first, then (AND THEN ONLY) rotate the mag to the rear to lock it.
Trying a direct forward insertion results in the front lug stopping under the locking point and the mag falls off at the first shot.
Good luck!

Oh, I got the mag "seated" OK and it never fell out, but it wouldn't capture the first round no matter what...
Just look at the bolt carrier. If it has two grooves about 3/32" wide and about the same in depth on each side along the bottom of the carrier, it is a conventional SKS carrier that has been put there.
The "D" is supposed to have the lower part scalloped so the mag lips can fit in there.
If you can lock your mag on one of these un-scalloped carriers, either you have damaged the feed lips or your mag is holding by sheer friction and sits too low for the bolt to catch a round on the feeding cycle.
Try to retract the bolt to see if you can seat the mag fully.
If it does, you'll have to grind away the lower part of the carrier grooves to allow the mag to sit higher. One isn't supposed to have to retract the bolt to allow mag exchange.
Can you send a side view of that carrier?

PP, may i make a correction to your post, there is no difference in the carrier between the reg and "D" , except some "D" carrier has no charging clip holder .

the main difference are in the bolt , the "D" bolt has the two lips on either side ground off to allow mag to be inserted without cocking the carrier & bolt .

Bolt, that is!

Yes, you're right Curtton, it's the bolt, not the carrier that has the grooves or scalloping.
Brain farrrttt perhaps... maybe I should spend some quality time with my SKSes; haven't done it for too long.
