Since you can get the XCR-L pistol magazines in 7.62x39, I was wondering if a conversion had ever been attempted before. Granted there would be some work involved to get a properly functioning mag well with release, I think that a project like this would be worth while. Having neither an SKS or these 10 round mags, I can't verify that there is enough room in the existing magwell to accommodate the mags, but it should be close. Any thoughts?

No problem, as long as you pin the modified mags to 5. As usual, there was a big thread about this 2 days ago which you could read if you like.

Why would he need to modify the pistol mag? It's perfectly legal to use a 10 round pistol mag in a semi-automatic rifle.

Not as I read it...
As I read it I believe it to mean that that is the case for RIMFIRE but when it comes to CENTER FIRE it says
2. Magazines designed or manufactured for both centrefire calibre rifles and handguns

Magazines designed to contain centrefire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic rifle are limited to five cartridges. However, magazines designed to contain centrefire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic handgun are limited to 10 cartridges. Magazines designed or manufactured for use in both semiautomatic rifles and semiautomatic handguns are subject to the limit of five cartridges.

I believe this is the relevant section:

4. Magazines designed for one firearm but used in a different firearm

The maximum permitted capacity of a magazine is determined by the kind of firearm it is designed or manufactured for use in and not the kind of firearm it might actually be used in. As a consequence, the maximum permitted capacity remains the same regardless of which firearm it might be used in.

Example:
The Marlin model 45 (Camp Carbine) rifle chambered for 45 Auto caliber uses magazines designed and manufactured for the Colt 1911 handgun, therefore the seven round and eight round capacities are permitted. A similar example is the 10 round capacity magazine for the Rock River Arms LAR-15 pistol, regardless of the kind of firearm it is actually used in.

That section refers to mags designed by the manufacturer to be used interchangeably in both pistols and rifles, not the use of pistol mags that CAN also be used in rifles (but not specifically designed to do so).

Case in point, the XCR pistol mags are 10 rounds, the XCR rifle mags are 5 rounds. However, the XCR pistol mags happen to fit the XCR rifles as well, and can be used legally at 10 rounds in the rifle.

Correct. The magazine is the critical deciding factor, not what it's used in.

This is comparable the the ar mag adapter for the CZ 858 rifles that Wolverine carries.

s**t !

I was doing my own prototype ... Its on my milling machine right now ... damn

I am very eager to see what you come up with, hopefully it looks this good.....
