So I have a 1952 Tula Arsenal Russian sks that I have just recently bought acouple weeks ago onthe weekend I took it to the range to have some fun and I noticed that every once in awhile the magazine would just pop open. Has anyone else had this problem . Is it just because the gun is old . I took the gun apart fully and took all of the original oil off and Re oiled .
Thanks for the input
Cheers

I'm looking at my 1954 tula magazine latch right now, it's pretty beefy and I can't see it wearing down unless it gets heavy abuse. the latch spring is really strong, ie: I have a hard time pulling the latch open with my pinky on my left hand (I don't have a spring scale to actually measure the stiffness).

Feel how tight the latch is, it should be really tight not sloppy at all, and have a look at the catch hook and the tab it grabs onto, maybe there is some gunk blocking the latch from fully engaging?

The spring and latch are cheap and easy to get, the magazine is easily replaced with an aftermarket magazine.

If you can't see an obvious problem, post a photo of the latch and lip

Hi All. I've also just encountered this problem at my last trip out to the range. After a couple of hours there (switching between my sks and another rifle), my magazine would pop open dumping my rounds on the table when I took a shot. I've taken the rifle apart and done a THOROUGH cleaning and didn't see anything that would point to a cause. (I always clean my rifle after each trip to the range). Not shooting corrosive (Norinco silver box). Any ideas?

Thanks,

I had the opposite issue happen to me last time I was at the range with my SKS. After firing about 60 rounds I noticed my mag release was jammed and the mag would not pop open. It was seriously stuck! Luckily the gentlemen at Club de Tir Ste Agathe was an SKS expert and helped me pop it open. (The people there are awesome and always welcoming btw). Weird how I have to drive over 600km to find a range... But that topic is for another thread. lol
