SKS malfunction, need advice!

I don't have anything to offer that hasn't already been said, but I'm curious...
You said "all four rounds went off";
Did you only load four, then have a slam fire and auto fire all at once?
Did you load five, fire one, then fire the second and have a burst?

It hasn't happened to me yet, but I bet I'll shyt myself. :)

I loaded 5 with a stripper clip, closed the bolt and fired 1 shot no problem, next time i squeezed the trigger the remaining 4 rounds went off all at once.

Take it apart and shake the bolt if it rattles its not the firing pin if it doesn't then its stuck out and is slam fireing which means it's fireing out of battrey... Take the pins out and clean the inside and out side of the firing pin as well as you can. It happens when you use surplus ammo very crossive and don't clean it

You could always take it to a gunsmith that can work on anything and ask them to fix it as it's not working right.

Just so you are aware, a true slam fire starts with the bolt slamming closed on the first round, which is why its called a 'slam fire'. If the firing pin is stuck forward, the action of the bolt closing sets off the first round. Its very dangerous because if someone isn't careful, who knows where their rifle is pointed when they snap the bolt closed. People generally aren't expecting their rifle to fire off all of its load when they haven't even touched the trigger yet.

What happened to you is basically the same thing, with the exception that you started it with your trigger pull and your gun pointing down range. Just be mindful in the future that it can happen as soon as you pull your stripper clip and release the bolt.

Its a good reminder for anyone with an SKS to make sure they are fanatical about safe muzzle direction, at all times.

Also, clean the trigger mechanism thoroughly.
You need to determine the cause of this malfunction.
If it is slam firing, there is the risk of you or the rifle being damaged.
I would suggest that "SKS has gone full auto!" might not have been the best header. "SKS malfunction" might have been a bit more subtle.

Yup! Title edited, tiriaq is 'bang on'.

Cheers

Had the SKS out for the second time and on the 3rd loading it let go with all four rounds at once. i did do a good cleaning each time it was used and when new. I have heard about slam fires and assuming this is related to the same problem. What the best advise to fix this problem??

Thanks
3 Major questions.
1) Do not use comercail ammo. Soft primers with this rifle can cause slam fires or bump fires.
2) If you have blow primer pockets or installed your firing pin incorrectley this will also cause slam fires or bump fires.
3) If the trigger is not installed properly or if some one has screwed with the trigger system can cause slam fires or bump fires.
1) Please strip and inspect the bolt.
2) do a saftey check on the trigger assembely.
3) Post back any descrepences or what the problem was back here.
Also the only dumb question is the one that hasn't been asked.

Yeah, when I got mine, the previous owner had monkeyed with the sear/hammer engagement. It would spit out a beautiful rainbow of shells every time I pulled the trigger... I have since replaced the offending parts and it is now working "properly". I won't say it wasn't fun though...

And remember....SKS do not need gobs of oil all over the bolt. A thin bit on the outside contact surfaces but keep that firing pin channel pretty much dry. Oil the bolt internals for storage, but keep it nice and clean for use.

There are two common causes do these these slam fires and variants:

1) Poor cleaning. The bolt needs to be fully dissesembled, and cleaned when you unbox the rifle and are confronted with cosmoline. Simply boil all the parts in water with a drop of dish soap, remove after 5-10 mintues, parts will dry on their own. This will ensure the firing pin channel is completely clear, as well as having the other parts free of cosmoline.

Also, if using corrosive ammo, ensure proper cleaning and inspection of all parts and channels for pitting and rust.

2) Incorrect bolt assembly. Ensure the firing is in the correct position, and it rattles when the bolt is shaken. Another little check I do after reassembly is locking the bolt open, then holding rifle vertical upside down, them right side up to visual see gravity extending and retracting the firing pin.

If the above is not followed as general maintenance, this firearm can be liability. If proper maintenance and assembly does not correct the issue you have a larger issue on hand, and would reccomend taking it to a gunsmith, or just getting a new SKS :)

Pick up a Murrays firing pin and spring...He's down in Texas...I just sent him an email about a broken one that I had (bad batch) and he sent me a new firing pin and spring for free...Nice guy too.

Sounds like the sear is out of spec.
With no rounds in the mag and none up the pipe, hold trigger back, rack the slide and let it slam forward.
You should be able to release the trigger and hear audible click as the hammer resets. If it doesn't, the hammer already fell from the slide slamming.
A $5 dollar new sear from SKSMAN fitted properly to the trigger works everytime.
