I was looking into getting a muzzle brake for my sks. I've did some research on a few twist on, pin on, bolt types. ie: Nc star ones. I also seen a muzzle device you can attach to your barrel to add threads so you can add AK 47 brakes. Looked at a few from tapco brakes. What's your take/experience with muzzle brakes and your sks?

I have a Ncstar pin on one, makes a lot of noise, hard to clean and doesn't really do much else.

Oh and I cant fold the Bayo out with it.

Needless to say I find it a waste of time and money, YMMV.

I had a bolt on one, shot a few rounds, took it off.
It now sits in a box, beside my gun cabinet.
I wouldn't bother with it, the sks doesn't have enough punch to need a brake.
Although it will add a tacticool look , if that's what you want.

I was looking for a brake to reduce recoil, the tacticool would be a bonus. If it adds weight and doesn't add to function it's gone. Ounce to pounds it has best function. That is why I have a bunch of rem 870, sr-22, 10/22 and ar parts that never get used.

well said. Total waste of money and time. More ammo is money well spent.

I had a pin on one, and the bore fo the brake measured .550". Needless to say, it didn't do anything for recoil at all. In order for it to actually do anything, the bore through the brake has to be less that .010" larger than the bore diameter of the rifle. That said, putting a cheaply made chinese twist on or pin on brake on a rifle where the barrel outside diameter varies greatly from rifle to rifle, well...it's just not possible to be that precise.

Also, mu pin on brake fell off after about 20 rounds. The pin backed itself out. I made a new pin and peened it, and that fell out after another 40 rounds.

Anything other than having the barrel threaded properly in a lathe is going to be less than optimal. For the price of an SKS, $200-300 to buy a decent brake and have it fitted is just not worth it IMO. Plus, as it's been said, you can't extend the bayonet. Tht's half of th fun with an sks :)

yeah i guess you're right sks doesn't kick really and my "rapid fire" only lasts for 5 rnds lol. as for the bayo. it was just added weight so i took it off. The only time it was used was as a rest.

Well, if you don't end up listening to everybody else, maybe you could start learning from your own past mistakes. Ther eis a thread here somewhere about the worst aftermearket parts people have bought for the SKS. Read it, you'll soon discover that 99% of the stuff for sale is crap. Unless your job #1 is impressing nose picking 14 year olds with how tacticool your 60 year old carbine is.

I dont get why everyone laughs at the fact of putting a muzzle brake on a SKS...I mean, alot of people put them on CZs, ARs and AKs...Doesn't have that much kick, but if you can take some kick out, even slightly, why not?

I know it's only a 200$ rifle, but some people actually love this rifle and price is not the issue.

How much would properly threading the muzzle cost to put on a CZ or AK muzzle on it?

I'd be interested in that if it's under 100$.

Just my two cents.

Odds are (unless you have a lathe, know somebody, or get a killer deal) getting your muzzle threaded is going to run you atleast $50 (from what I can find). To get a decent muzzle device, your going to be paying $50+. Assuming you can get your SKS threaded to the VZ thread pitch, you could use a variety of muzzle devices currently available to us Canadians. Or you could get it threaded to the common 1/2"-28 and use most AR ones, but you would have to get it bored out to a 30cal bullet. There are a few available in 30cal, but more limited. Real world, after shipping and stuff, your probably looking at $150+, or just get a cheap Chinese one. Either way, you'll probably get the same results.

Personally, I don't think it would benefit much, especially since I find the SKS completely managable, with no muzzle flip, recoil, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I love my SKS, I don't mind putting $200+ optics on my $200 gun, but thats just my 2cents.

If you want to do it, simply to do it, go for it though.

I bought a NC Star break when I first got my SKS, and I had it on for one range trip. It adds weight to a already front heavy rifle, and in the Tapco stock its even worse. It comes loose as well, its a pain to clean, but hey it looks cool...

People put muzzle devises. ie: flash hiders, muzzle brakes and compensators. On ARs and mini 14s. Chambered in .223. So what's the big stink about putting one on a sks for the 7.62x39? Hell the vz/cz 858 has a variety. It will reduce recoil and look cool while doing so. I don't see the problem. I just wanted some advice on what some of the gear out there so I didn't just burn more $.
