I just bought a Russian SKS and had some questions: the oil can that came with it has two chambers. Why does it have 2 chambers and each chamber is marked "W" and "H". What do the letters stand for?
Just curious.

The letters "W H", which I am told mean the following: The "W" is in fact the Cyrillic "ShCh" & the world transliterates to "Shchelo" which means lye or alkaline solution/Solvent. The "H" is the Cyrillic "N" and transliterates to "Neft" or oil.

Thanks for the info. 98%Brent. I was just curious, I thought maybe one side was for oil and the other Vodka !!! To keep you and your rifle well oiled in the Russian winters. LOL.

Thanks for the added information Six. Also, the Russian "M Maslo" is also another Russian word for oil. Or even Malso for oil you cook with.

There seems to be quite a few SKS metal oil containers issued. I have one that looks like a two cylinder engine with W/H, one that is a rectangle with two tops with B/U, another is an oval shape single top with the izzy logo and a chinese one which is a single top rectangle. Any others out there
