SKS Optics/mounting

A good way to mount is to drill and tap the receiver cover. My brother did that to his and it's rock solid. You have to use a tight receiver cover though or the whole thing wobbles too much to be useable. I have a tight one on my SKS, but did not want to drill holes into the factory one, so I bought a spare. The spare was looser but My brother(journeyman welder) welded the front tabs and now I'm in the process of filing it to fit.

As for scope I'd go with compact and light weight. I don't know about brands, but that would probably depend on your price range.

I have a 4MOA green dot on the receiver cover, and its ok for a gun that shoots 4MOA. I wouldn't waste the money on a good scope for a short range gun, and I certainly wouldn't want to sacrifice its stripper loading ability. A scope won't make an SKS into a sharp shooter, but it helps to find the target a little quicker in low light.

What about some of the after-market stocks with the rails closer to the front? Would a red dot on there do? I'm not big into magnification yet although a red or green dot with a little bit would be nice. I've seen this configuration before, has anyone tried it? Red dot on ATI or Tapco stock mounted on the front rails... can`t say I find that spot very appealing for an optic. It might be a good enough temporary set up until I figure something out. Good idea, Kaboose.

What is a good optic and a good way to mount it on a SKS without interfering with the use of stripper clips?

Our premium grade is better than anything on the market as it is a full length rail made from a single piece of aluiminum.

Ooops! Never mind, cannot read Monday morning syndrome. Just saw the stripper clip requirement, LOL.

bc tactical sks scout mount Rock solid. While not all receiver covers are created equal, I believe they either have a little jiggle, or are a PITA at dissassembling for cleaning.

with trs-25 .I assume. I'm shopping for one after I discovered the vortex sparc is a hair too long for both stripper clips and the gas piston lever on the sight block using the above mount. I have heard others using it with success. Other microdots smaller than the sparc should work.

EDIT: I assume you read the sticky in the red rifles section

Oh ####, no, sorry I'm new and I hadn't made it there yet.

I guess the huge rail kind of does look cool. And if you have an after market magazine its probably not a big deal loading them by hand if you're dealing with a whopping 5 rounds... although I wouldn't want to have to buy 10 of them. So the stripper clips are still a pretty valuable trait I suppose....

Well I did experiment with a prototype early on that will accept a stripper clip.

If there is a strong interest I will consider a small production run.

I had decided to keep my focus within strict limits early on, and I felt that stripper clip access was not as big a priority for a scoped rifle. And as you say, with the Tapco and other detachable mags, it seemed a moot question.

However, I see the stripper clip crowd is still represented so I will dust off the old plans and see what I can come up with.

For an optic, the Magwedge or a drilled and tapped mount are probably best.

For a forward mounted red dot, I really like the Midwest industries mount. Super low.

I know a couple of people including myself that would be very interested in a rail with stripper capability!

Mag wedge.

Would it be difficult to single feed ammo under that rail?

Very easy, that is the original way I intended it to be done after rail install.

The Tapco mag argument is a way to satisfy the objection over lack of stripper clip access, but in no way does installation of the rail make it necessary to trade your original mag for a detachable.

I run a magwedge kwikrail and Tapco mags in my SKS. IMO the advantages of a picatinny top rail that keeps zero outweighs the loss of stripper clip use, especially when mitigated with the use of detachable magazines.
