I also vote for the SKS. I've owned a couple '51 Tulas, one in wood stock and one in Tapco. Sold both but kept the Tapco, putting the Russkie into a Chicom stock. I then took the proceeds and bought a French Tickler - NIB old stock in Cosmo. Dropped it into the Tapco to continue using the 1.5K of ammo I still have, but may get another Spam can JIC I 'run short'.

in the post I editted out..... my answer to this SKS vs Nagant for a first hunting rifle would be neither one.
This thread was from 2008 so none of this really matters
But for 400 bucks..... looking for a hunting rifle...... I'd be looking for a Lee enfield sporter in .303 long before i would consider the sks or nagant
