I never quite understood the whole "matching numbers" thing, as far as the SKS is concerned.
I suppose if someone is a serious collector, then maybe yes...but most people I know care only about one thing and that is reliability and maybe the cool, utilitarian factor.
All the SKS rifles I ever owned, not once I bothered to check if any of the numbers are matching or not.
I just shot them.
I don't think that the Liberals will ban the SKS due to the fact, that most of them are non traceable (with the exception of any post may 18-th purchases maybe).
They know, that the level of compliance as far as turning them in would be near zero.
They will sooner ban all of the semis, than the SKS
100% agree with you - I think they have realized that banning by name is only going to precipitate new models for which they will have to deal with later. I think I even heard something like that from NFA Talk as I was driving to work this morning - Igercich believes there will be a more broader ban.
But even post May 18, if they were bought privately and people actually got a reference number, the government has no idea what was bought/sold. Even if one bought an SKS retail, the government/police would have to confiscate the store sales records to track them down...and stores aren't going to just hand them over without a court order.
I do think unfortunately the liberal government is trying to play the long game here. I just hope that this economy and all their scandals and abuse of power is finally the death knell in the NDP decoupling its support and hopefully Trudeau will suffer a non-confidence vote at some juncture before he has a chance to make the continued march towards a full out ban a reality.
As for the matching numbers - yes I think it is more of a collector's thing. I have 2 of them all matching that I have never shot and based on close inspection, there is zero wear anywhere even after I cleaned up some off the cosmo. I think I am going to just keep it that way. I know, seems like a complete waste of money to have something just sitting around, but I have collector's toys, hockey cards, comic books, etc that are in the same situation - more of a "having a piece of history" something that is in as good of a condition as I could find. I have some early 1962/63 Spider Man comic books that are graded in near mint and I had thoughts of just breaking the seal and reading them, but I dunno, I am kind of weird that way of just liking historical items.
I do have a "beater" SKS that I use that has a refurb stock, refurb gas tube, but rest of it matches and the stock is in rough shape, and that one shoots fine, but it's more for utility...the ones that are in collector's grade have absolutely gorgeous stocks - I more just handle and take a good whiff of circa 1954, which is like 20 years before I was even born. I have some that are in amazing shape but have been shot, so I may break one out tomorrow and give it a whirl.
