SKS pricing, are they really all that differant ?

I have decided to join the dark side and get a Russian SKS, mainly due to the abundance of inexpensive ammo !

So I read a bunch of sticky's, watched some You Tube and have been watching the exchange.

The asking prices are between $250.00 and $700.00 Are they really all that differant ?

Whats with the ones that retail for $229.00 at Canadian Tire?

This will be a fun gun on the farm, targets and the odd gopher.

Get a nice refurb for $250 and have at it. Condition and finishes vary, but the only really important thing to look for is a very good bore and no rust in the gas tube. Chances are if it meets those conditions, it will be a reliable shooter. I prefer the 1952 specimens as they have a combination of earlier build quality and a chrome lined bore. Some like the expensive and rare '49's. Some like the '49-'50's for the spring loaded firing pin. Some like the '53+ for some of the later features like the spring loaded safety. Some believe the '49-'51's with non-chrome lined bores are more accurate (and they probably are very marginally so)... so buy what you like. :)
 
i like the russian real deal refurb , just get one check the bore and gas tube if the rifling is sharp and barrel is not frosted and insides are rust free
then have at it ,it will last forever mines a 53 izzy free floating pin and chrome barrel


 
As others stated, check the bore and gas tube.(gas tubes can be bought aftermarket) Buy the cleanest, cheapest one.
Laminate stocks will Generally be a bit heavier, I think I prefer the lighter solid wood stocks myself. You may not end up being a fan of the rifle in all honesty. Or it may be a gateway to a sks collection. OR open you up to a bunch of other rifles in the same caliber if you like the cheap round. They are fun to customize but I keep going back to the original configuration with a rubber butt pad for increased length of pull. If you decide the gun is not as accurate as you want it to be buy a cz527 in 7.62x39. A great pairing.
 
It is true what was posted about. Especially a gateway to other rifles. The Sks is a gateway drug to other cool Russian rifles. Next you will be eyeballing a svt-40 then since you already bought a bunch of 7.62x54, what the heck pic up a cheap Mosin then you will want a shorter Mosin and get a m38 then see a m44 with the cool bayonet, then realize that you better grab a m39 before they are all gone. Then you start collecting Finnish mosins like a m24 with the heavy barrel and all the rest of the collective mosins.
 
Well, I joined the darkside today. Thank you for all the advice and the stickys in this forum.

We went to three different stores and picked one out to take home.

Blued finish , oiled arctic birch stock, 1950 Tula refurbished. No chrome barrel, rifling looks crisp and clean. All matching # except mag. Mag is blocked with the small bar stock on the pivot done very clean.

I will clean it up soon and try it out !

It totally is a gateway gun. I've been trying to understand what is up with this recent milsurp craze, and I believe has all started with this influx of SKS over the last ten years or so.

Thread's not even 10-years old ! As for the SKS, a 54 russian is not a 'collectible' in a Tapco stock . Rifle is worth maybe $5-600 IF the bore is 'fair-to-good' but the round count could be in the Thousands - it's a refurb probably. I just sold a Tapco stock with 5x mags for $350 as a pkg, the mags go for $50-75 each alone and the stock alone s/b ca $150-ish. The rail is another $100-ish, but 'altogether' I wouldn't 'add things for a total price. Esp w/o the OEM stock, too. AND it all depends on the 'market-location'. ON will have more buyers&sellers - competition both ways, I'm 'out East' so smaller mkt.

That's fair. I appreciate the info. Just trying to get an idea as to what to sell it for. I spent 500 for it. But thay was 3 ish years ago. Not looking to rip any onenoff was thinking selling for 400

somker - As I said the Rifle could be worth $500-ish if in good cond. Plus the Tapco stock & mag, so $600+ since you're in ON. A 'Big market' there so likely to find a buyer easy. The old Tulas are 'hard to kill' - I sold one last year for $500 in a Chinese wood stock !

Selling for 500 or 600 wouldn’t be ripping anybody off. Now, if you were one of the fellas tossing it up for 1000, you’d be looking to rip someone off. A crying shame that so many in this community would just go for that instead.
