SKS Problem

I ordered an SKS from Lever Arms in November 2005 and for the most part have been pretty happy with it. I've put about a 1000 rounds through it and lately I'm starting to get soft primer hits. The rounds have a decent sized dent in the primer and if I put them back in they fire fine. It's starting to become annoying because it will happen 3 or 4 times in a row. The serial number on the gun is 040###X. Anyone else had this problem ?

take it back to lever and get the barrel pin replaced, there is a previous thread regarding the issue of forward barrel creep on some of the 04 models. I understand that lever has experience with this repair from reading the previous thread. AND don't shoot your rifle till you get this fixed!!

45apcking could be right , check the barrel and don't shoot it till you do .
another problem could be at fault - crappy ammo , try someone elses or another brand . Couple of people have had problems with it . Mine and a friends did the same thing with eastern block ammo , we got three different crates from three different suppliers , two did what yours is doing and the third worked great , go figure . Never had any problems with Chinese ammo , good luck finding it .

The issue with the 040 barrel pin was supposed to be fixed quite a while ago. Since you only bought it a few months ago, that rifle has supposedly already been fixed before it was sold.
Perhaps phone lever to double check. Maybe do a search of this site and check when it was they were having problems with these guns. If memory serves me right, it was way before nov 2005. I bought my sks from lever in the summer and I was reassured then that they were all fixed at the store.

I see the same issue with my Lever SKS (shot it for the first time last week).

The primers appear to be hit hard but they do not fire.

I believe the newer shipment @ Lever is different than the faulty pinned barreled SKS's. These ones appear to be military types with the spike bayonets.

If anyone has a clue I would love to know.

Dave

Funny...my SKS, which was bought last Dec, has the same problem...I though its the low temp frezzed the oil around the fire pin....

Here's a pic.

Below are two fired rounds. One seems to have been hit well (left) and the right one has a small dimple. All unfired rounds looked similar to the one on the right.

i had my old sks out shooting in -30, i keep the bolt and pin fully coated in clp, and never had even a hiccup. the only problems associated with my sks was when using czech ammo, had alot of misfires, looked like some of the primers were to hard.

Actually, I have been there and done all that.

The pin was soaked ovenite in solvent. It definitely rattles and moves freely.

I bought a 4 lb slegde hammer this week to see if I can get the pin out. It's REALLY in there.

I have had this exact problem .
My gun is just fine . no problems there .
It's the ammo , eastern block ammo is hit and miss on quality . Why do you think they dumped it .
I still have a stash of two different styles of Norinco ammo , I try to keep it for three gun matches . The commie ammo is for plinking , FTF's are no big deal when you are just screwing around . I've seen some really deep primer hits that don't go bang but only with commie ammo .
Click, click , bang , click , click .
reload with Chinese ammo :
bang,bang,bang,bang,bang . You get the idea .
And yes , the commie ammo always fires on the second hit , every time .

So far I am using Czeh Ammo.....too bad it's the only Ammo I have since used....maybe that's the problem....

My first opinion would be to get an SKS with a threaded barrel instead of pinned, cuz i think 45acpking is probly right, very likely an ammo issue too though.
If you want good ammo, for a reasonable price (no where near cheap as the czec stuff, but fair) get NGA rounds, i get it for about 15 bucks for a box of fifty. and its friggin good.

plus its a quality box they come in too, you can re-use them for all kinds of stuff. I use them to hold cleaning kits for my guns

I've fired about a half a case from my 2 SKS's (1 is a Lever 040) with no issues.

The Czech works well so far, just got a 2nd case so if I have problems with this one I'll post .

My czech stuff works every time, first case is empty and half way thru the second, still waiting for my first click, lotsa booms, had one not feed straight and bent case but maybe I didn't have the bolt fully back.. It's a military gun, treat it like a stolen car!!! Great cheap fun gun..

I found the problem with my SKS....it's the water around the fine pin....when I shoot outside(-20)...the water turned into ice and I get a misfire. I put the bolt into a pot and boiled it for 20 min....then put it on a heater for 24 hours. Put light oil on it....no problem anymore....
