took a old ati stock and started playing with it[its my buddies rifle actually , i asked him if i could use it as a project as i shoot it more than he ,lol]started by cutting off the bits i didnt like from the stock, and filled in the area at back of the receiver where it had been butchered before.its a sks 'd' by the way and the receiver wasnt fitting back as far as it should ,so had to fix this as well .its a little more than half way there now.looking at a 1x red dot of some kind like a bushnell trophy 1x28 dial in electric, any ideas on choice would be appreciated as i know little about them in general.the pics show a scope in place ,but this is just to get an idea, also the trigger group is loose in pics as was tightened up the fit to get rid of movement, althogh this makes it a little harder to remove.

Red dot scope

I would look at:

Good quality for the price. These are Chinese replicas of some of the major manufacturers. I bought an Aimpoint replica for $105.00 and I'm quite happy with it. I you look around here for a second hand one, you might be able to find some as low as $60.

Good luck with your project!

I like the color :D Lol, sounds like something my girlfriend would say!

It looks like you've done a lot to it, but upon closer inspection all I can see is the missing ducktail (the little kick-up at the back of the reciever on the Fiberforce stock), the missing front sight/bayo lug and the paint job. Obviously the bedding/inletting work you've done won't be visible. How does it shoot with the stock fitting the reciever properly? Any wonky barrel harmonics going on with the front sight missing? Did you notice any difference in accuracy, recoil and muzzle flip? The reciever cover pin looks like it's been replaced with a bolt, was that part of the project also? Does the scope mount hold zero better with the bolt as opposed to the pin? Sorry for the pop quiz :p

As far as red-dots go, check ebay. An aimpoint rip-off would look cool, the kind with the cantilever mount. Like these ones;
Aimpoint copy, from Hong Kong
Another Aimpoint copy
This one looks cool too! 4 MOA "red cross" reticle!
The smaller the dot the better, obviously. These three scopes each have 4 MOA dots, which means you should be able to cover the bull at 100 yards w/the dot and keep almost every round in the black (except for the occasional flyer) That's assuming your rifle shoots close to 4" groups at 100 yards, though.

Y'know what else would be cool (IMHO, of course) is a thread-on muzzle brake. With the front sight outta the way, you could thread the barrel and get a brake made at a machine shop to your specs. It wouldn't be particularly expensive, and it would allow you to design a better/cooler one than the junky pin-on designs available. There's more than just looks to muzzle brake design though, here's an excellent article that should help; RVB Precision - Adventures with muzzle brakes

Here's a bone. Don't waste your money on any scope mount other than the Scout style mounted on the rear sight. It's the only place on the rifle that won't move about and the alterations are undo-able! Marstar has them but they are expensive. That style with a red dot or Long Eye Relief scope would work well. Stock looks good. Pete

I like the color too , what did you use and how well does it stick ?
I've reshaped a ton on my ATI stock , works much better .
I also bolted the reciever cover on and ran a bolt through the reciever into the trigger group and sucked it together . takes a little longer to strip but it shoots much better .
I still think that type of scope mount is worthless , looks cool but they suck .
The scout mount looks ok but I really like the look of Kalinka optic's mount . I might have to try one out but I have already scoped mine twice with poor results and don't really feel like stealing money away from the M305 project .
Had a red dot , prefer a holosight but they are more money .
Nice project

thanks for the input so far guys, this is a fun project for me,and the first time i've tried to do something of this sort to any stock other than filling in the selector switch and painting my[m305] m14 syn stock, so its a good learning experiance for me. duke1;that aimpoint looks ###y,i'd like to hear some about it [is it robust?how many rounds have you fired with it on and does it hold zero well? poweredby beer; yup ,its a bolt alright ,and i can put alot of force on that rail and not detect any movement. this stock also had goofy looking ears at front that covered the hand guard,i cut these off as well.i've successfully lost the front site [i gave up looking for it now]its not ready to go to the range yet ,but i'm hoping the end result will be decent groups without any flyers. emmab; i've looked at that mount and do like it better than where i've got it right now,if i'm not happy ,i'm going to try it. rupzuk; the paint is rustolium textured finish in what i would say is dark forest green.it leaves a nice rough texture i like and does seem to be tough.i'm trying to find a matte clearcoat to make sure its durable although i may have to spray over top again to regain the textured finish. i've got a nice tight lockup with the trigger group now ,it takes a good smack to lock it up ,but now has no movement that i can dettect. oh, btw ,that idea for a muzzle break is good poweredby beer,i almost missed it.i think this is going to be my rifle soon as my buddies got my jungle carbine.

bought a chinese sks at sail, installed the same ati stock (good fit), fabricated my own scope mount out of angle aluminium (reno depot/building box),drilled and tapped 3 holes on the left side of reciever, along with some very slight filing of stock for clearance. put a 4x scope on it ,which will soon be upgraded to a 3x9 mil dot. using relatively new (as in first outing) hand loads,
(31.2g ball c2,horn.123g fmj) was able to achieve 3" at 100 meters. i'm positive i can knock off another inch with the right powder this summer.
-use your initiative, don't let the nay sayers say it can't be done.-it was a 5 shot group with rifle resting on my hand. next test session will include a harris bipod.

Franco , are you neck sizing ?
I tried it in my M305 with fireformed brass and it really shrunk the groups .
If I could find cheap brass I would love to load for this rifle .

well, here's my progress so far, shortened the stock now to make it handier[actually feels more comfy that the mags aren't where i want to hold it. finally happy with the way the receiver is fitting[tight]also included a brace to stop any forward movement that was happening.i have to admit this is taking a little longer and more workthan i had thought .still wanting to put a brake/suppressor on it,hopefully soon.the more i play with the sight the more i'm thinking i want to try a scout scope mount
. just going to have to shoot it soon to get a feel for it the way its mounted now

Is that a Leapers reciever cover mount on yours, palinak? The kind with the screws that bottom against the reciever? If so, how do you find it for holding zero? Any problems with it? Does it move around a lot at the back, where it's held by the reciever cover pin?

Reason I ask is because I've got one myself, and I've been messing with it trying to produce a more accurate way of returning it to zero after it's been removed. It's good so far, but I haven't range tested it yet and I've only been playing with it for about 3 weeks :D Any thoughts/advice on this type of scope mount?
