Heard a lot about SKS's over the past 6-8 months and I have been considering picking one up, can someone given me some advice on what to look for?

I would imagine there are some basic things to check out before actually deciding to buy one, so any tips and guides would be helpful.

Thanks in advance

Outside of the regular gun checks, there is way to many options with an SKS to describe here. I'd start with Curtton's great sticky in the Red Rifles Forum, then hit the links he has posted. That should give you a start. Watch it though, they have been known to become addictive.................

I'm gonna hijack this thread a bit with a question of my own. I've got a Norc SKS and I can't hit #### for beans! I set up a target at about 100 yards away (and closer) and I can't hit a god damned piece of 4x4' plywood! I dont think it's me honestly, I have a decent shot and i've resorted to trying every option on the adjustable back sight.

I found the rear sight to be to narrow, I opened it up a little with a triangle shaped file. Now I can hit the gong at 100 yards all day long...hope this helps. I brought the file to the range and took a little off at a time until things felt right. cheers!!!

The SKS is a great gun and can shoot low-cost surplus ammo. It's not a 400 yd. tack driver though, and from what I've read can be tricky to scope properly. Put a Tapco T6 adjustable stock with pistol grip on it and it's great. Read the stickies, then go get a Russian SKS at Al Simmons in Hamilton (they carry the Tapco too) before they're gone, you'll be glad you did. I love my Norc, but wish I'd bought a Russian, saw and fired one last week at the range and it was really nice. ;)
