I am interested in buying a SKS for fun shooting.
I have been reading alot trying to find out what i should be buying.
Anyone who knows anything about SKS's see any good deals on here on the EE that i should know about?
Should i get a russian, chinese or yugo if its going to be a shooting gun?

Your in Vancouver then one from WestRfile is the way to got if you want a nice one. 225..

If you plan to dress it up like a X-mas tree and put a bunch of crap on it then get a cheap non matching from Trade Ex at 169$

It all depends on what you plan to do...

If it's a plinker, it won't matter if you get a Russian, Chinese, or Yugo SKS. Buy one, a crate or 2 of ammo, clean the hell out of it, and shoot it.

There are some great stickies at the top of this forum, check 'em out.

With the price of an SKS in the $200 range give or take a few bucks, I wouldn't worry about looking for deals. You won't get much better than what the sponsoring dealers sell.

About all the same, get it from the EE or a store your choice, I have a Russian one and like it, some say those are the better ones, some will not

just get one, clean it well, get a crate of ammo, and go have fun, enjoy it for what it is

read the many threads already started if you really want an indepth analysis of which one to get

read the stickies, watch the youtube clips, and you will be good to go

I have both Russian and Chinese. They both shoot quite well, but the Russians are prettier. Then again, un-issued Chinese SKS from Marstar for $189, how can you lose?
Ammo is as cheap as its ever going to be. Buy lots because its surplus and it will eventually dry up. There is nothing better than shooting an SKS for sh*ts and giggles in an isolated gravel pit. The prices ain't gettin any better and its a limited time offer. Bite while its hot.

If you are like me when it comes to used or refurbished firearm, I like to look and feel the product before I buy it. I do not like to rely on other peoples perceptions of what a good product is. I see you are in the lowermainland, there are a lot of shops that have them in stock. Lever arms always has a nice selection SKS's on display.

I generally take this approach to firearm purchases, but SKSs do not vary much. They are pretty much all the same for feel. Maybe a few differences from Chinese to Russian, and the Yugos are a breed of their own. All my Russians feel exactly the same with my eyes closed. For $200 or less, your choices are new/unissued Chinese or rebuilt (used) Russian that looks prettier. If you want more than a shooter, then you pay more. Might be better looking, but still the same feel. Shooting wise, every rifle is different. In combined collections of over twenty SKS rifles between myself and shooting buddies, the best shooter is a painted bolt 51 Tula refurb.

Yugos are gonna cost more than you need to spend for a good shooter. And their barrels are not chrome lined.

Get a Russian. Better finishing, and they're the original. I've examined every nook and crannie of my Russians and Chinese. The Russian parts are simply better made and have better overall finishing. They all shoot more or less the same, except I find that there are always a few "superior" shooters in the bunch. I went through several SKS's until I settled on two shooters that can consistently shoot 1 to 3 inch groups at 100 metres with only the iron sights and the surplus Czech ammo -- of course when I do my part. The Chinese military SKS's are nice as well, but the stocks aren't as nice, and finishing is good, but not great.

I have a Russian sks and love it no point looking for deals like said above because there already so cheap my sks is surprisingly accurate compared to a lot of my friends so i don't know if i just got lucky or what but its a ton of fun

Its $200 who cares..

Hey thanks for all the info everyone..
and i know its only $200.. but i have never shot one or even held one..
So i was just curious before i buy one..

I just purchased that special moreguns supply is having.. Thanks again for the link.. Ill let you know how it goes.

You're telling this to a guy who immigrated from the place the SKS are made lol? Sorry but an $200 firearm does not require major thinking especially when its an SKS that is virtually bulletproof.

When you only got enough money for one, then it matters. SKS is bulletproof, but other $200 guns... yea better think twice about what you're buying.

I took advantage of that special from moreguns
got the sks and 1200 rnds.
It arrived in 3 days.
I am more then happy. Cant wait to fire it.. I used the Simple Green method for cleaning it.. worked great.
Thanks for posting that link FTAview
:)

Something to consider and it's not a big deal,I can personally work around it BUT, I find the Chinese stock with the rear sling swivel {which is mounted on the left inside of the stock v.s. Russians mounted traditionally} is a real pain in the a$$. Both Chinese and Russian stocks are too short for me but with the Chinese trying to get a cheek weld with a buckle in your mouth takes some getting used to!:D
