Just bought a very nice SKS but the discoloration of the receiver cover bugs me. How to get rid of it?

Seems to be a common problem.

Does it show if you leave oil film on it? Maybe use wax like on stock, I use Minwax paste floor wax.
I have a '51 Tula that doesn't show that stripe - or on the 'spare '51 cover I have.
Here's another SKS forum -> http s://sks-files.com/
and maybe something on Yooperjohn's site?
Boris ??

There was still cosmoline on it when I bought it. I have seen other SKS like this before. Yes, it kind of blends in when I cover it with wax or oil but I would like to know if there is a solution to it. It looks exactly like in the link I provided, I guess I have to live with it. Thank you.

I looked on the SKS-FILES link I sent you and the #1 post refers to "? Factory blemish ?". In Post #14 Boris B has really good pics of the 'stripe' they refer to, and suggest those w/o the stripe have been "Permablued" . I've not seen that product around NB/NS shops but there aren't that many out here anyway. Here's a link that may be the solution you're looking for. You might want to search the SKS Files and others for use of it.

It's normal and not something worth changing. All the non refurbs I've seen have it. I was under the impression it was caused by the placement of cross bars in the storage crates but heat treat would make more sense. You see something similar on TT-33 slides too.

The stripe spot is where the cross bars sit in the factory crates. It's normal and not something worth changing. All the non refurbs I've seen have it.

I get it now. Mine is fully matching including the stock which is the first I have seen where the stock is still the original one.

I tried permablue before but now I am wondering if I should attempt this on an original rifle.

I feel a little bad now because I did not pay a lot but it was what the seller was asking. I have seen similar ones for twice the price. I guess I was lucky.

Thanks a lot for the answers.

I would also like to add that I was a bit confused when I got it. All matching, almost like new but the bluing is not as clean and deep as a refurb I have from the same year but with a laminate stock.
