SKS Refinishing Project

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site so I figured a great way to start would be to share my SKS refinishing project. I've never done a project like this so I started with some internet research. Used some paint stripper and then sanded at 80-100-220 grit. Stained with varethane espresso wood stain, then sanded to 400-800-1000-2000 grit. Stained again, and sealed with minwax polyurethane, and polished with minwax polish. Hope you all enjoy he pics as much as I enjoyed working on the rifle.

Did you have fun trying to remove the pin in the handguard? I thought I was losing my mind trying to remove the one on my sks when I refinished my stock.

Actually it came out no problem with a small punch tool and pair of needle nose pliers. Got it back in without much hassle too. Guess I was lucky, because I keep reading horror stories about that pin lol.
 
To remove oil that has soaked into wood , like the ends of the SKS top hand guard , you can soak the ends in Acetone for a few hours to a few days and it will dissolve and draw out the oil from the wood .

Rinse well and let dry for a few days , replete is required .

Sand and re stain / apply finish .

Makes for a very even looking finish , no dark ends .

This is also a useful trick when stocks are broken due to excessive oil soaking into the wood over many years . Once the oil is removed the stock can be glued ( now you will have a good clean dry wood to apply the glue to ) then
refinish as desired .

Just my 2 cents .
