What kind of wood is a russian laminate?
I'm refinsihing mine as the horrible shellac or whatever was peeling off.
I want a very light natural look, or maybe lightly blonde wood, that has some lustre. What should I use?

Laminate can be made of artic birch. Tung oil make a very nice finish, more coat=more glossy finish. Before oil, you may want to stain the wood to change the figure a bit or you can just oil without staining.
Minwax offer a vast choice of stain colors and good tung oil.

I had great success stripping the arctic birch laminate stock with furniture stripper, finishing with 00 then 0000 steel wool, then 5 coats of tung oil. The natural colour of the wood with the honey finish of tung oil is really quite striking.
Good luck and post photos of your results.

Any idea on how to fix a loose tip on the stock? Right now I got it shimed with some leather, but would like a more permenate solutuon.

Thanks for the reponses. I used furniture stripper too and then I've been doing some sanding (around markings). The unsanded wood was very grey but is cleaning up very nicely.

I found my laminate stock had some area's of darker colour remaining after I stripped it. What i did, and I have read it elsewhere, is take a new razor blade, (like used for scraping paint off windows) and lightly drag the blade over the stock. It really cleaned up any problem area's. Then use steel wool.
