I've decided it's time to get me one of these rifles. I take it the Russian made guns are the way to go. Where or what should I be looking for in purchasing an SKS, I've never owned a milsurp rifle and also am not at all intersted in corrosive ammo. Is there some-where non-corrosive crates of ammo are available as well? Thanks for any help.

1951 and before do not have chrome-lined barrels.
Later models like my 1955 have a "spring-loaded" safety, which I prefer. My '51 does not.
Also, my '55 has a "curved" gas block, which I will assume was a design improvement '49s were mostly square, my '51 is a 45 degree angle, my '55 is a parabola)...and also the bayonet fixture is cut at a slight angle on the later years, to make it easier to deploy.
Enjoy.

PS True "non-corrosive" 7.62X39mm ammo in "surplus" is relatively rare...be sure you know what you're getting.

used about 50 corrosive greek 303 rounds in my enfield. didn`t know about all that back then, but all i have is a stain around the firing pin on the bolt face that won`t come off. havn`t tried really hard to get it off, but that was 15 yrs ago. will fire it again soon sometime. so i don`t have any real issues with corrosive ammo. just clean after use

Several points:

1. Wolverine are good folks to deal with.

2. Surplus ammo is surplus for a reason: it is no longer needed and the primers are getting dodgy. That's why it cruds up your rifle and shoots all over the barn.

If you want to shoot cheaply, get a loading outfit, a crate of surplus, about 200 fresh brass cases and switch over the LOADS from the surplus ammo to the new cases. The bullets are good, the powder charges are good; what are NO good are the Primers. You won't "shoot the sh!t" out of the rifle, either, and you might even become a decent shot with one.

3. The bog-stock SKS is about as trouble-free and SOLID as it is possible to build a rifle. They have been used by dozens of armies and by many more "freedom fighter"/insurgent and terrorist groups. The Viet Cong made excellent use of the SKS. There is NOTHING you can do to "improve" it, so save your money.

Hope this helps.
