SKS rifling nick?

The other day I was looking down the barrel of my sks, by tilting the gun a little you can sorta follow the grooves, It was all perfect until what appeared to be what looked like some damage or impurity.

Basically I followed the groove then all of a sudden it appeared as if there was an indent or extra groove horizontal to the one I was following.

I'm not sure if this could just be the shiny chrome playing tricks on my eyes or perhaps there is an imperfection.

Its a rifle I mainly used just for plinking, never really paid attention to grouping. At 100 yards it didn't seem accurate at all, but the sights used were the ones that came on the sks and no one shooting it was exactly very good at it at the time. However with such an imperfection (if real) wouldn't we expect the rounds to basically, fly all over the place?

I wish I could post a picture but I'm not sure how I would take one.

Its definitely not a foreign object either... I'll be going down to the range in a few weeks so I'll have another look at it after some shooting.
 
Come on, poor guy. He is probably a new firearm owner, doesn't know much about his gun.. he is only going to learn by asking questions and getting help..

Anyway's it does appear to be the gas port upon closer inspection and better lighting :bangHead:

I think I jumped the gun on this one didn't quite know what to google for this but of course it all makes sense now. Never actually put too much thought into that since I'm in the middle of exams and figured this was the quickest way to figure it out. Quite embarassedddddddddddddddd

Dont listen to the trolls, knitting is far mare dangerous with all those needles and yarn and technical maneuvers :eek: DONT DO IT!. Now!, check to see if it is the gas port, it will be at TDC of the barrel in roughly the same place as the gas block on the barrel. Accuracy is a widely variable thing with the SKS, some shoot like shotguns while others can shoot sub 1" @ 100m with good ammo. Things to look into are the crown, stock fitment and barrel condition (gas ports arent factored in ;)) The other variables are the ammo (surplus isnt made for precision) the trigger (most are horrid which negatively affects your ability to hold and follow thru your shots) and the sights (large and crude, meant for dropping socialist pigs out to 300m)
 
Hey, straighten a piece of coat hanger wire long enough to reach gas port and measure on outside and then (with care) measure down inside. Careful not to poke your eye out though.

P.S. FIDDLER needs some happy thoughts.

Couldn't he just take the gas tub off and shine a light down the hole while looking down the barrel as well.

And fiddler knitting is way to dangerous I gave it up for guns, and the doc said I had to quit or my #### will fall off or something like that lol:D
