The old eyes arent what they used to be so I am thinking of mounting a scope on my SKS.
Has anyone had sucess with reciever mount scope packages?
Wht did you like and what could of been improved?

I bought a receiver mount and scope earlier this year for my sks and have yet to install it. I think it is about the least expensive mounting system for a scope on the sks. It has been suggested to me if you get the receiver mount, one should get a deflector for the shell casings flying out as well. I didn't get that so I guess I'll find out if that is true later.

I'll have to file it a bit ( the mount) to make it fit and it looks like if I filed it to much it will be a sloppy fit. Not good for the accuracy! I think it will be an over the holidays project for me. I'll let you know how it goes once it is done.

Custom work for fitting, but it's really easy... any gunsmith, machinist can do it.

I enjoy the result and the low price, it's a way better look than the other kind of scope mount made for the sks.

PJT,

An SKS dedicated board can be found here with lots of info:
http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php
Generally speaking, the receiver cover mounted setups have a poor rating. I know of a three guys who have tried this route, with lots of shimming, loc-tite, etc, anything to minimize play,etc.. It was futile - aggravating. Worked for a short time at best. On the SKS boards they also rate them poor. The Choate SKS mount and Scout Scopes mount have good reviews. There are a few other good ones like the Kalinka Molot rail - you'll find that on the SKS boards. Tango's looks like a good idea also.

X2 on what Steiner said.

I have tried the receiver cover mounts myself and experienced the same hassle. These rifles were simply never meant to use their receiver covers as scope mounts.

I also like Sgt.TangoDowns solution.

I have read alot about various mounts and the troubles others have had. As Steiner and Calum have said I have read good things about the Choate as well. That seems to be the opinions out there.
How about the short scopes? I am thinking a fixed 6 but varying opinions on the quality available. Anyone have a suggestion on brand names other than leopould?

Leopould? IMHO is is not smart to put scope which is more expensive thet the gun, escecially if the best you can get out of it is 2 MOA ;-)

I have a Choate mount on my Cabin Plinker SKS. It works great. I don't have a shell deflector so the scope takes a pounding from the brass, it's a cheap 4X scope on a cheap gun so I don't care. Hasn't lost zero yet. I can hit clays and soupcans at 100m with it. Works for me :)

As per what SGT. Tangodown and Steiner have said, I believe the aftermarket reciever mount I bought is not a good choice, as I recently suspected. The mount that Tangodown is using in his pic's is likely a better much better choice.
I did some searching on the net and also came accross this mounting system. Looks a lot a lot more secure than what I purchased.

SKS SCOPE MOUNT (Scout Mount)

Anyone have any experiance with this mount??

I have the following B-Square mount on my SKS and it hasn't lost zero yet. Mind you I have only removed it for cleaning twice. I have the scope set so that the stripper clips can still be used.

Depends on the carbines configuration and the shooters skills.
I have archived 1 MOA with an SKS, and so has my wife (who is a new shooter), and I know we are not alone on this ability.

FFS people scope Mini 14s with Leopould scopes...now that is a real waste. :D
