SKS scope....

I'm looking at purchasing a scope + mount for my SKS with the Intrafuse Tapco stock. I don't want to spend a lot of money on it...but my friend told me that the NC Star scopes aren't the best quality.

My need is only a bit of magnification so I can reach out to 100 yards. I also need to figure out a mounting system...I see there are bolt cover mounts that also "clamp" onto the sides of the upper reciever...anyone know if these are stable enough? Or do I need to get a side mount that I drill and afix to the reciever itself?

I'm REALLY in need of some advice! Thanks!

take a look in this thread
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=439418

basically the side mount stuff is the most solid, it wont move and you put a shield on to deflect the shells to keep it from damaging your scope and from affecting your zero. theres a system that replaces the gas tube cover but i dont know how effective it is as and is probably only good for looks. there is another option that goes over the rear sight. great for red dots and short scopes if you can find one. pretty sure its in that link. drilling and tapping is the most secure option out there but you need to cut into the stock to make it work and also modifiy the gun with some holes. so its a permanent setup.

Yeah I already knew that Uchi... I am looking for some direct input on scopes as well, and that thread is mainly about mountings. Need some more experienced guys to post on the scope info.

Well with a scope you get what you pay for. Everyone here will tell you that. Ncstar is cheap Chinese #### that won't hold zero and will likely break after a few shots. How much do you wanna spend on a scope? if you go with that bolt on side mount with shield you can get a 4x Bushnell or other name brand scope for under 100 bucks and be set

MLanteigne,
The consensus is that receiver cover mounts
will not maintain zero in the long run. There are
several drill & tap mounts that work quite well
on the SKS, the Choate, Weaver Converta-Mount,
Tula side rail type etc. I chose the Weaver system
and used the Weaver 48881 kit.
Check out the Sticky: optics, sights and mounts
in the Red rifle section page 3 post #25. As for
scopes, i am using the Leapers 6x32 mini AO, length
is 8 1/2" and strippers can be used.The cross-hairs
are a bit on the thick side but no problem focusing
on a 1" dot at 100 yards. I also use a Tasco 2.5x20
(7 1/2" in length),both are maintaining zero after
hundreds of rounds. I am sure many will jump in and
bad mouth the Chinese scopes and that is fair to some
extent, I have tried other brands of inexpensive Chinese
scopes with bad results, but the Leapers and Tasco work
for my needs. Should you wish to step up in quality the
Nikon Prostaff is an excellent choice although strippers
can't be used and a shell deflector will be needed.

i was looking for one through google and came across a guy who took a mount from a remington 870, same style i have on mine, it was there the day we went out. and he put it on his rifle. might be something to look into. im gonna keep seeing if i can come across the Weaver Converta-mount through google but if you find one first let me know what theyre worth and maybe we'll grab a couple and split the shipping

Yeah, just gotta watch for places that will actually ship to Canada...that cuts the number of positive hits down...I may just check at Silverdale and see what Seth has that could work, or how much he can get a mount for. I also want to make a trip out to Erie Trackers in Pt. Colborne.

Uchi, we should make a trip out there in a few weeks...maybe after the upcoming big event.

yeah buddy ive been meaning to get out to erie for a couple months now. let me know when you wanna go ill come for sure. from what im seeing guys use mounts from shotguns and such, and you can even get a 2 piece mount, so its like the one i posted in the first link but it has a plate that you attach to the gun and then use screws to put that mount on with so that you can take it off and put it on again. oh and the first link was to amazon they ship to canada, ive got stuff from them in the past and it comes pretty quick. :) we can also make a trip out to the two spots in hamilton, i cant mention the big one because they arent sponsors and i dont wanna catch another infraction but theres them and the fishing place on barton that has a ton of accessories
