So, all the SKS I've seen, when the gas tube is removed, the piston just rolls out. So, I've now seen one that appears to be sealed on the ends with the piston inside. Is this something done when refurbed? How does this get disassembled for cleaning?

My guess is either dried cosmoline is holding it in, it may have developed some rust holding it in place, or possibly some dirt or debris. If you haven't had it apart and cleaned it yet try heating it up and see if it melts any cosmoline that may have gotten in there and push with a punch or something from the back end.

Banged it out with a punch and some force and yes appears to be some corrosion was holding it solid. It was so solid that it appeared to be sealed in place and with all the different versions with extra holes and such in the gas tube, I was thinking this was something I hadn't seen yet (and yes it wouldn't have lasted long, so that made no sense to me). Just wanted another opinion before banging a punch in there.

Thanks
