I came across a piece of gear the other day, and found myself wondering if it could be added on to an SKS with a standard wood stock.
The item in question is a "Separated Leg Bipod", listed on Amazon.ca here:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07DG1CTSD/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_9?smid=A15QLX3KDITQKH&psc=1
Basically, there are two bipod legs, each of which mounts to one side of the fore stock on a rifle. I think the primary intent is for these to be mounted onto a railed fore-end, such as those found AR-15 and similar rifles. But then I began thinking about the situation with the Chinese Type 56 SKS stock and spike bayonet. As those come, there's really no way to mount a bipod, unless the bayonet is removed or the rifle stock is changed out for a modern synthetic stock.
Then, for reasons which will become clear in a moment, I began wondering if it would be possible to mount a small section of Picatinny rail, or a sling swivel stud, on either side of the wooden fore-stock, and mount the halves of the separated bipod legs to those. I think this particular bipod will attach to either, and the swivel studs would be a slightly less fugly on either side of a wood stock than a length of Pic rail.
What got me thinking about it was being about ready to go ahead with buying a Type 56 SKS that's in "as issued" condition - well looked after and with a good barrel, but not all matching, and with a stock that's not a spectacular piece of wood. I'm already thinking I might mod it slightly to put on a Weaver side-mount base for a small scope. I've never tried that particular setup before, but I came across the necessary bits recently at a reasonable price.
However, I've had the misfortune to fall and break my arm, so even after the immediate damage has healed up, I'm going to be somewhat right-hand-only for a while. Thus the thought of a bipod.
I could, it's true, use a rest or bags, or remove the bayonet and fit one of those weebly-wobbly bayonet lug bipods. But then I saw this item listed on A'zon, and got to thinking.
So, has anyone had any experience with the "separated leg bipod" (there are several companies making them)? I really don't want to put on an aftermarket stock and do a complete "Bubba" SKS, but since I'll be modifying a not-spectacular stock slightly to add the Weaver side mount base, adding a couple of attachment points on the sides of the fore-stock might not be totally out of order.
Since there's so much accumulated experience and knowledge here in Red Rifles that has helped in the past, I thought perhaps someone might have some experience with, or some thoughts on these weird bipods. Certainly they're new to me.
Cheers, everyone,
