I just got an SKS, love it. I shoot left handed. Just wonder if any expert opinion about the danger of doing this. Sometimes it worries me but I love shooting lefthand.

thanks for your input

I never got hit by empty spent casings, but what about something went wrong and an internal explosion occurs?

:?:

Good question .

The SKS is a very reliable rifle . 7.62X39 is not some super dooper magnum round . Unless you did something really stupid like ( not check the barrel for an obstruction after a very soft reporting and recoiling round ) or just have some really bad luck ( Then your doomed anyways  ) I wouldn't worry about it .

Make sure you wear proper shooting glasses and enjoy :D

You are in danger if you shoot a right-handed semi lefthanded. If the case is overloaded or there is some sort of malfunction, the chamber is designed to deflect the blast up and right of the receiver. Now I'm not saying this will happen or anything, but just take extra care to be safe and remember to wear shooting glasses at all times.

"...You are in danger if you shoot a right-handed semi lefthanded..." Nonsense. That's as daft as the militia plug I overheard telling his buddy it was impossible to shoot a C1A1 lefthanded. I asked him how I managed to shoot 'expert' with one for years.
cheeko, 30 plus years of shooting every long gun left handed. No fuss or bother. If a case lets go, it won't matter which side you shoot from.

It's not nonsense, and I'm not saying you can't shoot it lefthanded. From watching the Firearms Safety Course video it showed that semis are designed to deflect the blast of a malfunctioning cartridge up and right of the shooter, therefore if you shoot it lefthand there is a slight danger. I'm not saying don't shoot it lefthand, I'm saying be extra careful.

here is the video, now show me where he oh so great CFC is offering technical advice on the safety of shooting a semiauto left handed, also show me where they get the info from becuase no manufacturer that I have seen cautions against shooting the gun left handed....... frankly even right handed shooters shoot left handed if they can't find a proper shot.

I am a lefty also and I just make sure I am wearing shooting glasses when I am working on loads, or trying out a new rifle. If it lets go there is a good chance of catching something whether you a righty or a lefty. Go shoot, have fun, and don't worry about it :D .

Cheers,

Corey

Kool guys, thanks for all of your input. We went to the gravel pit this weend and blasted 5oo rounds. Holly #### that was fun. I love my sks

Rohann, I'm concerned you are quoting the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, or the training aids, as an authority on anything related to firearms. The course, and the video, were developed by the same mentality, and indeed the same people, who cooked up the friggin' Act. Credible, it's not. Not to say safety training in firearms isn't a laudable goal, and it is really the only part of the latest gun control I can swallow, but still, there's lots of mis-info in the course, and lots more innuendo intended to put folks off shooting.

Lots of firearms are not tremendously lefty friendly. RH bolt guns, with gas escape ports on the left side of the receiver come to mind. Keep the gun in good condition, use good ammo, sensible hand loads without trying to eek one last load out of a tired case, and wear safety glasses. Good advice for right hander shooting right handed rifles too.

Ok, the video is called: "Aiming For Safety: Technical Safety". It's a video you get while taking the course.
Now I know they stress safety to ridiculous extents, but all I'm saying is: be careful. Always wear shooting glasses.

-Rohann

Oh ok I see. Now they do stress safety to a ridiculous amount, but hey, it's the CFC, and if they don't make videos like that they're liable.
