I'm looking to get a side mount for my sks, tapco stock. I will probably go with a red dot, but otherwise a detachable mount would be nice so i can still use iron sights and stripper clips if I have a longer scope on there. any suggestions?

anyone try out the NCstar with the side and top rails? Just by looks, that one would fit in well with my tacticool theme

thanks

Choate mount is the only way to go for a SKS scope mount (at least one that will hold zero, unlike the reciever cover mounts).

Unfortunately for you, it's not easily removable and it can be tricky to install properly, as it takes 4 holes drilled and tapped to mount it to the side of the reciever.

Thanks Shredder, Ive heard nothing but good things about the choate and nothing but bad about ncstar haha.

anyone have any experiences with the tula mount from the sks optics sticky

As Hical said, that isn't the entire mount, that is just a rail that attaches to the Russian style of side mount found on their military rifles. You need that rail, and then you can attach something like you posted, and put whatever optic you want on top.

Despite popular belief, Choate isn't the only way to solidly mount an optic on the SKS. If you do mount a side rail, you get the benefit of a solid, drilled and tapped receiver mount, with the huge benefit of an optic easily removed with no tools or time. Since that seems to be what you want, then I would recommend trying to find a mount in the traditional Soviet style with a quick release lever, instead of the clamping bolts on the NcStar.

I went with the Choate mount from hical.ca. Still have to drill & tap, but looks like a great mount. Nice looking too. Some mounts look a bit klunky to me, but not the Choate. Can still use the iron sights aswell.

How centered is that optic, mounting to the wood instead of the receiver?

I'm thinking I'll probably go with something like that from kalinka optics, just waiting to hear if it will work with a tapco, I'm also curious about how centered it is.
