Got my SKS today from wanstalls. Overall very impressive, with one minor caveat (just me being picky). They shipped the package pretty much the same day that I ordered it, which was super satisfying. No questions or emails before shipping and all was well. The package arrived on my door step the exact day Canada Post said it would (all the way to Ontario!). Which in itself is an oddity. I ordered the birch stocked new/unissued rifle, and this is my only very minor gripe as all retailers are doing this. I wish they would list the weapon as refurbished/unissued rifle as this is exactly what you are getting, at least I did. Having never bought milsurp before I wasn't fully aware of this and just assumed this was from a magical cache of weapons that just never saw a pair of hands outside of original constuction. Unrealistic on my part I guess.

Anywhooo...the good stuff.

The packaging wasn't great, but sufficient. My box looked like it had been folded in half (obviously it wasn't)...so I was a little concerned.

Inside everything was as it should be, undamaged. Maybe bit more bubble wrap would be warranted.

Here's a little proof of arsenal refurbishment (learned that via google!). The only forced (stenciled or x'd out) serials are the gas tube and the stock itself. All other pieces including the trigger guard have stamped serials. You can see the refurbs stamp at the top of the receiver.

Here is the total package, just need to tear it down and clean it up. The mouse pad is super handy, my old mouse pad is pretty much all done (too much BF3!)

And here is a lovely pic of the rifling. Oh, and proof of my stupidity. I saw this 'blemish' and quickly panicked. Seems that is not a blemish but a gas port. It's not very pretty, but I guess it is functional. The rifling looks very good though don't you think?

Oh, a quick look at the reciever/bolt face. It would be fair to say this has likely not been fired since refurbishment.

So all in all, very nice for a gun with this much history and this many years behind it. Now to turn it into a bush gun for those pesky deer! Anyone got a tapco stock to get rid of!?

That's a familiar looking post. I received my SKS from Wanstalls yesterday, and not surprisingly, the pics are virtually identical!! Enjoy!

Got no ammo. :( No one around me carries it either. Waiting on a delivery from another supporter here, but there was a bit of a snafu with my credit card. :p

Lol the blemish! You sir would not be alone on that one. My initial wtf moment transitioned to "ooooohh right....gas port." Both mine came with nice looking rifling too. Very happy with my cottage/crown land shooters :)

Yeah, there's a few places around, nothing near me though. I am in the middle of everything but close to nothing. Will hit one of the gta shops next time I get a chance for sure.

Any bubba'ising will be reversible. All removed pieces will be carefully stored. You never know, these beasts may actually be worth something one day!

Thanks, my daughter is my life.

The Cosmo clean, and complete re-oil took me about 2 hours. Brake cleaner and mineral spIrits are your friend.

Ian

Yeah, I wrapped the stock in paper towel and put in a black plastic bag to bake in the sun while I dealt with the metal bits. Still expect some cosmo burn when I hit the range though.

I am rethinking about leaving her as is and looking for a 25-06 for my deer/do all rifle. This one just seems like too much fun to molest with plastic bits.

Ian

absolutely. i'm a firm believer in leaving surplus alone. i know mosins and skss are 1-200 bucks but still, they look ridiculous all bubba'd out. refinish the stock and parkerize the metal = beautiful.

for a "do all" id recommend something in .308

wanstalls just sent me my canada post tracking number for their laminate sks! I'll post some detailed pics of my first arrival from them. I'm crossing my fingers for a fancy smancy mouse pad as well ;)

Got two bad shoulders (motorcycle crashing was my previous hobby) so need to keep recoil to a minimum. I really like the ballistics of the 25-06, pricing and a availability are obviously a concern, but I think the 308 might be a bit harsh for me. Though it is certainly more appropriate in case of stumbling across a black bear, which has been spotted locally.

No worries slushee, looks like Internet orders get them, while supplies last of course!
