SKS Sporter Pics

Thought I'd post a couple pics of my new-to-me SKS Sporter in a factory Sporter thumbhole stock. You don't see many of these around but its the only SKS variant that I ever wanted. Restricted due to the 16" barrel, takes AK mags, and the stock has been refinished in over 25 coats of "Russian Red". Shoots like a dream

Cool gun.
Great to see one in Canada. A lot of guys in the states cut theirs to 16.25".
Although I do remember a guy selling 16" barrels on the EE last year.

My Norinco came with a 18.5" tube.
So now we've got 16"ers 18.5" and 20" ones.
Now we just need someone to reweld the front sight to the gas tube outlet and get a 12" Lothar barrel, for the ultimate SKS.

Yes, so far you are the only one!!

I actually really like that. Mine is still in it's factory wood. I've put off buying a replacement stock for some time now as I find EVERYTHING out there to be too cheap and very low quality. I planed on buying a butler creek monte carlo stock, but once in hand I quickly put it down too. Tapco is Tapco.

I think I'm going to whittle myself something similar this winter from laminated hardwood. Looks like it'll a fun project now that I have some direction to work towards.

Is the original stock solid hardwood? If so, what is the life expectancy of these wood stocks? If you know. Things are made very cheaply these days.

It's marked "Labanu Ronkonkoma, NY" Looks like 1993 was the manufacturing year.

No offense taken, I agree that it's definitely a "love it or hate it" kind of stock. It's actually very comfortable to hold due to the pistol grip and to shoulder with a good LOP. The wide forend does take a bit of getting used to.

I'm not sure what wood it is, pretty sure it's the same Chu wood as on regular SKS's. I'd say its pretty durable as right now the stock is almost 20 years old and doesn't have a scratch or a chip out of it.

the first two digits is 93 ? if so then that sounds about right.
