SKS stock blanks - Any interest?

I have some 5 axis time booked for oilfield prototyping in the new year. Depending on how long it takes to get my other stuff done, I'm going to get a few SKS stock blanks whittled out as well - they'll be for one-off stuff later on.

Anyway, setup time for blanks is next to nil and the machining is fairly basic, so maybe an opportunity for the wood workers among us.

The inletting is copied from a '52 Tula (the date on the stock) - not sure if there are any differences between various years? Anyway, should be a 100% drop in. Materials are to be determined, most likely a laminate as it machines well and is readily availible in a wide range of sizes, but any other material could be substituted.

The extra material above the plane the action sits on is 2" to allow for a comb - SHOULD be enough material to allow for a comfortable cheek weld. LOTS of extra length for the ape armed.

Design work was done on Solid Works and converted to the .jpg below, dimensions are easily changed.

The handguards will have the ends and the tube relief done, leaving the top square.

The cross bolt was omitted in the drawing as I'm toying with copying the D model's mag well.

With the fiddley bits done, the profile of your choice could be scrolled out and finished as you like. Solid Works estimates a generic thumbhole made of oak (beceause it's in the program's material list) would weigh around 1.70 lbs.

Final costs would be based on splitting the additional hour(s) across the total number of units machined.

Thoughts?

I always liked boyd's laminate stocks, one for my D would be sweet. Will you source materials, or machine what the customer sends to you? For those with the hinged floorplate and duckbill mags, the D magwell will leave alot of room around the mag and wont look as clean, maybe have the D magwell as a seperate model? Any designs for the front of the stock? Would a barreled action drop into basically a block of wood to be finished by the end user?

I'm sourcing materials now - there's a company in Montreal that makes laminates for canoe paddles etc - Still trying to decide what I want for colors. Machining what a customer sends me? Sure. It will need to be to the same dimensions as the rest of the blanks - changing dimensions will require changing the machine's programming which will take more time... You get the idea.

Regarding the D - I don't know what I need to do there yet. I don't own one, so I'm relying on a buddy to send me his so I can check it out more closely. The same machine shop owns a machine that is basically a cnc sheet metal break - they use it to build stuff like burner inserts. What I have seen of the well insert for the D or an 858 doesn't look all that difficult to duplicate. I doubt the set-up for a normal SKS could be interfaced with the mag set-up for a D without more work than I'm really willing to put into it. Might look at building 5 round mags for some other rifles. The Solid Works designer is a fellow Nut and is kindly donating his time and skills.

And yes, the barelled action would just drop in. I'm not a wood worker so I'm trying this out for the first time. I am aiming for something along the lines of the pictures in post 4 & 6 in the thread below:

This whole deal is strictly for my own amusement - the general consensus is that it can't be done for less than a couple hundred bucks - if it can't, I end up with a few expensive stocks. if it CAN be done then I might look at a limited production run or two. Piggybacking into another project will help as is scheduling wood work during the limited times they do wood - then I don't have to pay for the cleanup that comes with switching from metals to wood.

I can't abide plastic stocks.

If quality of laminate is good and it is a drop-in fit (or a minimal adjustments) I'll be interested.
Any idea on price?

In detail B it looks like youve got a standard type 45/56 mag inlet, the D uses a boxed section of steel plate bolted into a much larger and squared inlet. The D stock also drops down lower around the boxed section. I think a standard type45/56 SKS mag inlet would be a better seller being that they are the majority of SKS's out there. Good work either way, keep us posted!

All good - I know it's a wordy post but it was covered. ;)

The first few will be 45/66 stock blanks.
