I have always wondered why SKS stocks are not varnished on the inside middle of the stock, as in where the action, barrel and trigger mechanism sit. Should the stock not be completely sealed especially for rain and such?

The inside looks like it has a coat or two of sealer.

Edit: I applied a few drops of Ballistol. The wood absorbed it. Ballistol website says it maintains, protects, preserves and rejuvenates bare wood.

The interior looks unvarnished, but a thin coat of oil may have been applied during the manufacturing to repel moisture. The oil probably just dried up, or was dissolved in cosmoline.

If not, I speculate it was the manufacturer trying to save time and money.

There was no need for it. Look at it now, 70 years latter, and stocks are still solid.
