Hey I just started the task of refinishing my Russian SKS stock today. It should looks nice and new for spring shooting. What I did today was strip all the old finish off the stock. Took me about 2 and half hours to do with furnisher striper and a paint scraper. Il post a few pics for you to see the befor and after.

I'm looking forward to your "After" pics!!! You going to use any stain? Should be very very nice!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Is refinishing "bubba"???

I dont consider refinishing bubbaing, to use a #1bcshooter phrase (not quoted exactly Im sure) If the Russians could do it in 1950, then its ok to do now

Hi GDavies,

What I would have done before all this, would have been to ask here first, then get to work after.

But it's too late for this, so here's what I'd reccomend.

First, the shellac you removed would have taken you maybe 10 minutes to deal with with the proper solvent (methyl hydrate). Light rubbing would have removed the surface layer, maybe more rubbing would have removed all of it; in any case it would have been quicker.

Second, removing the old shellac was not necessary to give it a new beauty. Thing is with shellac, if you just clean the surface with Methyl hydrate, then gently rub it with the finest steel wool, your surface is ready for new shellac. The new shellac with partly disolve the old, mix with it, and the surface will be "nice" again.

My advice at this point is to find dark-colour shellac (red ideally, but I suppose orange would be possible too), and bring back the stock to as-close-to-original as possible...

But, it's your rifle, so...

or Sienna Red stain, and polyurathane :)

Hmm, the trouble is, that would be non-reversible, which I would try to avoid. Better to save that stock, set it aside, and find aftermarket stocks (plenty around); these are more than happy to be subjected to any treatment the mind could imagine!

I thought it was non-reversible too, until Fry (from the big thread) mentioned the magic of Circa 1815, and it pulling the stain out of the wood.

True, potentially. Not sure if that would apply to all types of stains though. Why take the risk? Depends how much weight you give to the gain, compared to the risk...

And that rifle is just begging to be reunited with shellac, despite all the downsides of that type of finish :)

With your method of removing only the surface layer of shellac, do you use a clear or red shellac to refinish?
Also - do you get methyl hydrate from a paint store?

I think you use what you can find! Near my place, closest I found was orange shellac at Lee Valley store.

When i cleaned shellac recently on a Russian rifle, I tried to remove as little old shellac as possible. It evened out some serious "ridges" in the initial finish.

Im just playing around any ways , I got a very nice wood sks stock coming from Ellwood epps , that i made sure was coming befor I started this. Its more of a winter project becasue iv got nothing beter to do lol.
