Hey guys,

I have a couple nice stocks to play with. My goal is to bring out the natural colors, clean up the cosmo a bit.

I started the first by just washing down with hot tap water and a light scrub with dish soap and sponge. Now she dried a bit dull. What’s with that? Is here anything I can put on the stock to keep it a nice shine?

Some sort of polish?

Polyurethane?

Varathane?

Some guys use a furniture polish on them to shine it up a bit
a light coat of tru oil will make it shiny but it might end up too shiny

I scrub it down with methyl hydrate.
Then I bake it in the hot sun in the back window of my car to sweat out the cosmoline.
Then, I rub it down with boiled linseed oil until it sparkles.

Wax it. Here is recipe from here. I have not tried it myself so use at your own risk.

60 parts of turpentine, 35-wax, 5-rosin.

Parts are not grams.

If a 100g vial of turpentine (sold as turpentine oil), is 60 parts, then 1 part - 1.7 grams.

It turns out: 100g of turpentine, 60g of wax, 8,5g of rosin.

Carnauba wax is better, it is more refractory.

Use wax shavings. Heat turpentine on a water bath (it is better to do it outside), then add wax, stir until it dissolves, then rosin, previously crushed into a powder. When everything is completely dissolved, it is ready.

Some recommend that the wood should be heated before application, but if it was impregnated with oil, it can sweat, and the wax should be put on a dry surface. Spread hot wax with a brush in a thick layer, because it sticks to the brush. After cooling, the surface turns out matte rough yellow.

The next day using dull side of the knife scrape off all the dullness, and underneath it will be like glass. The deeper, the harder it is to scrape off, so do not be afraid to tear the finish. For a better shine, you can buff with felt.

I stained one of mine similar to the original red color, and then put a couple of coats of high gloss Varethane on it. It turned out pretty nice.
