I just got my SKS in the mail today and as expected it is covered with a liberal amount of cosmoline. What is best to use to clean the wood stock?? I'm hesitant to use brake clean on wood.

Also didn't realize that the bayonet didn't come with an edge on it, is this common of all bayonets??

Andrew

on't use brake clean on the wood. I just set mine on top above a heat register and then wiped it down every 5 or 10 minutes. WIll put outside in direct sunlight and let more of it sweat out once it warms up. But its good for now......

Well, it took a #### load of brake clean but finally got the rifle clean of all the cosmoline, blow dryer and a rag worked great on the wood. Will post pics soon.

Thanks for the advice, Andrew.

P.S. I was cleaning it in a "well ventilated" room.....and I'm still quite high from the brake clean

I mostly use rags wetted with white gas for both stock and metal. I do spray brake cleaner through the bolt to clean the cosmo from inside it. I also do the final clean on the metal with brake cleaner but I avoid using it on the stock.

Use rags .... heat will sweat out cosmo from the stock... wipe the sweat off... your rifle has waited 60+ years to meet you..be good to her... You wouldn't throw acid on your first date would you?.. (oh wait you did that already)

Bayonets do not come with an edge... no need for one

Zombies don't go down with a dull bayonet. I got my CZ bayonet razor sharp for when the zombies come knocking on my door :ar15:

lol :)

Actually bayonets are dull by design....they cause more trauma. You wanna tear your enemy's internal organs so he goes down, not make a fast healing clean incision. :)

That's quite painful actually! In a "SHTF" situation, I don't think I want to make them "suffer", more or less just try to get as many zombie kills under my belt as possible lol

You'll get exactly 1. The sharp bayonet will cut into bone just enough to make it stick and that's that. Over the last few hundred years, through actual combat, many people smarter than you have learned how to make bayonets that work as intended...

Just finished cleaning up my sks used both break cleaner and a heat gun on the metal parts that worked great on getting that nasty cosmoline out and oven cleaner worked pretty good on the stock just don't let it sit too long what I did wasn't sure if it would hurt the varnish or not and just going to leave it in the sun a few days to wick out what may be left in the wood. If the fella is serious about the bayonet I will take it as I am not too crazy about this spike one *L* want to make sure I keep the zombies down.

geneva convention disallows the use of sharpened bayonets, or the tri-blade, among other types, they want to be able to close up the wound if not to serious and send him back out, stupid yes, if i was at war last thing i'm gonna think of is making sure the guy don't die,

For cleaning wood I am a fan of the tried and true ( though sacrilegious to many in the Milsurp community ) method of: Easy Off oven cleaner; let sit for 20 mins; rinse off; dry and then multiple applications of BLO and elbow grease.

GoJo hand cleaner, without pumice. Wrapped in packing sheets, in a black plastic bag, in the sun for a day.
