I was pleasantly surprised that the tapco mag I ordered for my 1972 chinese SKS (factory 306, 1###### serial#) fits snug in the wooden stock it came with, holds the bolt open, and also can be fed from stripper clips through the open action. I don't know if older model tapcos did all of that, as I've read from the past that they did not hold the bolt open without a mod, and that they did not feed from clips without a mod. The mag does not release without opening the action *and* removing the trigger group, but releases easily on an open action in a late russian model (one without the firing pin spring).

Did I get it wrong about older tapcos or have they always been this kick ass?

Also the bolt on the russian barely fits through the feed lips of the tapco, with some slight friction... it doesn't snag the bolt or hold it in place if I try to get it to stick, as the recoil spring has enough energy to close the bolt the rest of the way. Should I still remove some metal from the bolt so it slides clean?

You shouldn't have to remove the trigger group to change the mag, and I wouldn't mess around with the bolt.
The mag should wear a little with use until it runs nice and free..

Cheers

What is likely happening is the wood stock is so tight that it is squeezing the feed lips a bit, I would open up the stock before removing metal from the bolt

This is probably why you have an issue with removing the mag, you shouldn't have to remove the trigger group

I stated that the chinese sks fits tight for the magwell, and the russian sks fits just right. The russian bolt is tight between the feed lips.

so you did... thats what I get posting on my phone before Im fully awake

why dont you just grind the bolt like an sks-d and then you can insert and remove the mag with the bolt closed

That's what I was thinking I should do for both. And trigger jobs, to take off 2 lbs or so. Just seems hard to justify permanently modifying a brand-new 40+ year old rifle without a clear need. I don't want to be switching mags, mind you. I just want to clip feed.

So older tapcos did not need modifying for the bolt hold-open and clip feeding?

save yourself some trouble and Shave the Bottom sides off your bolt. "2 small rails" then your Mag will go IN even when the bolt is closed. Bolt will still remain OPEN on last shot.

Strange that it takes clips. Material needs to be removed from the back of the lips for that.

Don't do the bolt mod, just use strippers.
I only remove my mags when I strip the rifle.

I have to remove the mag everytime I reload. Was wondering about doing some grinding so that I don't have to hold the bolt open with one hand while I try and stick the mag back in. Bad idea??

I love my tapcos, they function flawlesly. best mags for the sks IMO. too bad I cant say the same thing abour my promag. garbage

The bolt should lock in the open position after the 5th round is fired. The mag follower will push up the rifles bolt hold open latch/tab.

Also, when inserting a mag you need to manually push up the BHO latch/tab with your finger while pulling the bolt back.
This will mimic the act I described above.

The rail I will be using won't allow me to use strippers. Yes the bold stays open after the mag is emptied.
This is all new to me, never owned a semi auto before.
