Hey guys I recently picked up a cheap Russian SKS, its in pretty good shape with all numbers matching except the internal mag. I was watching some videos on YouTube about the Tapco clip mod, I was able to remove my internal mag and popped the Tapco mag in with no issues, only issue is the bolt doesnt stay open to remove the magazine. if these a mag mod to get the bolt to stay back?

Did I do something incorrect?

any help would be great!

Thanks!!

The Tapco mag should engage the bolt catch when the magazine is empty.
I have seen this before:
1) The mag catch is gummed up. Use motor oil to break down crusty cosmoline, grit and dirt.

2) The mag is not fitting correctly but seems to. Without seeing the rifle I can't determine if this is true.

Thanks for the pointers, I will see if I can find the mag catch on the gun, when I first did the mag install the bolt was held open, I removed the magazine and the bolt closed, I then tried to pull the bolt back without the magazine but I assumed it needed a magazine to hold the bolt open when the magazine was fully discharged, I held the bolt back with my hand and slid the magazine back in but this time the bolt came forward and now doesn't seem to catch to hold the bolt open to release the mag out. I will need a third hand to remove the magazine so I will see if my buddy can come over to help me pop it out.

You can reach up in the magwell when it is empty and push the bolt hold open catch up with your finger while the bolt is held all the way back and slowly bring the bolt forward until it catches.. After you have the bolt held back try inserting the mag again and see if it works. You shouldn't need 3 hands to remove the mag you can most likely get the bolt to stay open by pulling the catch up from the top, with a screw drive, while the bolt is held back. Don't stick your finger in there with the bolt back because it hurts like hell if it slams shut on your finger.LOL After the bolt is held back release the mag catch and pull the mag out.

Perfect!! thank you very much, I will give this a try when I get home tonight and report back tomorrow if I was able to keep it open, I will also keep my damn fingers outta there as I need all the fingers I got lol

My Son's 53 Tula wouldn't accept the 30 rnd aftermarket Mag (pinned to 5 of course) he bought, but fit perfectly on my 55 Tula, What I found was the bottom of my receiver was milled out in an Oval shape but on my sons they left 2 corners not milled out which stopped the mag from pushing the bolt hold open catch and fully engaging the Mag. this prevented the mag lock from engaging as well. I took a dremel to the 2 corners cleaned out the excess metal and it fits well and feeds with out issue now. Unfortunately I just deleted the pics off my phone or I would post them.

So I was able to locate the bolt hold clip and push it up with a screw driver, then I popped the magazine out.

This is the bolt hold, moves nice and freely

Here it is with the clip holding it in the up position, I was thinking the mag spring was too weak to push the bolt catch up? I lubed the bolt catch but I guess I will really only know once I take it out and shoot a clip through it.

Since I purchased it I have shot maybe 50 rounds through it, I decided to pull it all apart and give her a good clean.

After pulling it all apart I checked all the numbers to this gun, every number was matching except the clip, but I'm not using the clip currently but im glad its pretty much a matching numbers rifle.

I noticed some heavy pitting under the gas tube, is this common?

after a good clean I put it all back together.

Refrain from continually removing the firing pin. The extractor will eventually loosen and give you grief.

File the top rear of the mag, where it contacts the bolt hold open device, it will free up & operate then. It looks like a rounded piece on the spine of the mag, file a bit, then test.

ya the firing pin and bolt were pretty clean, I wont remove it very often, maybe after going through my tuna can of 750 rounds I will inspect and see what it look like.

Thanks for the pointer!

Clip vs. Magazine
You know that boxy rectangular thingy that holds cartridges and slides into the bottom of your semi-auto pistol? It’s not a clip — no matter how often the term is misused. It’s a magazine.

A magazine holds shells under spring pressure in preparation for feeding into the firearm’s chamber. Examples include box, tubular, drum and rotary magazines. Some are fixed to the firearm while others are removable.

A cartridge “clip” has no spring and does not feed shells directly into the chamber. Rather, clips hold cartridges in the correct sequence for “charging” a specific firearm’s magazine. Stripper clips allow rounds to be “stripped” into the magazine. Other types are fed along with the shells into the magazine — the M1 Garand famously operates in this fashion. Once all rounds have been fired, the clip is ejected or otherwise released from the firearm.

In essence, clips feed magazines. Magazines feed firearms.

Thank you! I am trying to get familiar with everything and the proper terminology of the equipment so when I ask for help others with the proper terminology will understand me.

Somebody had to say it...

Quick question to the SKS owners, do you run a lightly oiled patch down your barrel to give it some lubrication after cleaning?

No. I run a patch completely saturated in automatic transmission fluid (dexron 3) down the bore after cleaning. Then a dry one before shooting.

so this past weekend I went out and fired the SKS off on some crown land, had a good backstop so blew about 65 rounds out on it, I am pleased that the SKS ran the Tapco clips no problem, when the clip was done the bolt would remain open so thats a plus, first few shot it was tight getting the first round to feed into the chamber but after a few dozen shots the clips seems to work them selves in.

Now she needs a cleaning and oiling
