Hi,

I just bought 2x Tapco magazines for my SKS (w/ Tapco Stock) from SFRC to match the looks of my Tapco stock and for plans to add a scope rail later when budget is there.

However, i'm having problems with these mags (both magazines exhibit same symptoms):
- magazine is pretty to load and unload from rifle (takes some muscle)
- bolt doesn't slide forward and back easily, some loading problems too
- the magazine follower doesn't engage the bolt lock when mag is empty
- magazine follower doesn't slide up/down freely

am i missing something here or is there a common issue with these symptoms?

any help appreciated.

Chimo!

They often require sanding and minor material removal to eleviate the problems you're experiencing.
Look for pinch marks, and where the mag is binding up.

What he said, definitely. Gonna take some mild loving.

Also would suggest you google about a drop free bolt mod. Note that the bolt must be locked back to insert or remove the Tapco mags, if you haven't done that already. If you trying to insert mags with bolt closed, and unmodified, you will have issues.

Re-reading the OP post, most all of those symptoms may be a direct result of muscling in a mag, with bolt closed. So to the OP - is this the case, or have you tried mag insertion with bolt in open position?

I do understand this, and no, i was not trying to insert the mag with bolt closed, i had it open at all time when inserting mag.

i am aware of the "drop free bolt mod", but i'm not planning on mutilating my original matching bolt. However, i'm looking into buying another bolt body to modify for that.

i've watched some videos and i'm going to tackle one of the mags with sand paper and hand files and we'll see how it goes from there....

Sounds like a simple case of sandpaper or dremmel love, and get a bolt to cut up.

I bought a few extras for that same purpose, and think IIRC you can get them around $20 each. With the Tapco mags, I think the drop free bolt is pretty well necessitated.

Be patient, and have fun.

-Update: so i did some filing on the back of the magazine, front and rear corners and a little bit on the side and it seem to have eliminated the aforementioned symptoms, cycles normally, loads and eject rounds with no problem, but i'd like to file sides a little more to allow easier loading and unloading .

Thanks for the quick replies and help everyone!
