so i have an SKS carbine, standard trapdoor mag..

ive been musing on the idea that changing the magwell and trigger group over to those from an SKS-D would be all thats required for a conversion..

and i also have the feeling that im totally wrong..:p

can anyone tell me why it wouldnt work?

( ive never had a chance to look at the sks-d )

Why not just buy an SKS-D?

Personally I like the fixed mag and stripper clips more anyway, they load nicely and the bolt stays open after your last shot.

the bolt on my russian sks never stays open after the last shot. thats why i was considering the change. Is there something wrong with mine?

yes, for sure.

always with new surplus rifle , CLEAN THOROUGHLY . for you the mag well area where the "bolt hold" is and after cleaning the "bolt hold" still fail to rise then check the following:

1. with IZH import, quite often people try to force more than 5 rds into the mag thus bending the follower arm so gently bend the arm back up a wee bit at a time till the "bolt hold" pop up.

2. Bell and lever import , some how the back end of the follower got bent down , it should be inline with the follower.

gun was pretty spic and span when i got it. Ill try bending things back in place. Ill let you know hot it works out. and thanks for the advice.:dancingbanana:

This was my first mag conversion I performed on an old russian sks I paid $65 for 10 years ago. did it with a dremel and soldered an extention onto the floor plate release to hold the mag in. It worked great.

at 500 for a "D" if i can buy a rinco for under 200/250 pay a gunsmith for the meat of conversion for 100 to 200 , (am i crazy )

i doubt you can find a gunsmith that will convert for less than $200 and you would still need a "D" stock , that will cost you $40 so after conversion you will be looking at $440 -490 , not much savings i am afraid.
