Sks To Sks-d

Yes, it's a pretty big deal, you would want to be a machinist and have access to a milling machine.
And before you buy some of them, the detachable "duck-bill" mags for the standard SKS are useless and a waste of money.
Just buy a "D" model if you want one, they are not much more expensive then the standard model.
Personally, I think the standard model is superior anyway.....bolt hold open on last shot, you can load with chargers which is just as fast or faster then rocking in/out an AK mag, chargers are about $1 a piece or free with czech ammo while a 5/30 AK mag is $60+, standard sks is more reliable, standard SKS generally comes with bayonet while the "D" model doesn't, parts are plentiful for the standard model, not so much for the "D"...........etc. etc.

the ak47 series of rifles was never designed with a bolt hold open the magazines dont support this a few com bloc countries did make a mag with the last shot hold open but not many

the d and reg sks are way different the re sks follower arm trips a pin to hold the bolt open the d has no arm and no pin thus no hold open

maybe modify the follower

I wonder if the follower on an empty SKS-D magazine comes up high enough to interfere with the bottom lip of the bolt?

if you want and SKS d. simpy buy and SKS D, they arnt that much more $. or better yet, trade with someone (plus a few bucks). I don't understand why you want to switch though? both guns get the job done, and as stated befor, it's just as fast to reload with stripper clips as switching mags.

I can't imagine why you would want to change to a d model. The A has features taht far outway the D model... the bolt catch is one, stripper clip prawls is another. Plus it's not that hard to find detachable mags for the A model too. All you have to do is pop the pin out to remove the swing mag, and maybe a little fine tuning and it's a go. Cabela's sells them, although I've heard their's aren't that great (I haven't checked theirs out yet, but I'm pretty sure they're plastic. You can find good metal A model mags though. I know Alberta tactical is probly going to be putting in an order for them, and even P&D sometimes gets some in, but its very hit and miss.
And no, it is not practical to modify an A to lock open, it would requier an entirely new action pretty much, and for that much work your way farther ahead to buy a SKS D.

die standing and go down swingin

i have try to convert one and as quoted above it is a pain in the ass
stick with the regular sks and load with stripper clip it is much faster and less pissing around

I consider the D to be the better rifle. Or rather, I "would" if we could use hicap mags. I've had a regular sks and shot others. My D rarely jams, I can't say the same for the others.

D?

I've owned both (actually just sold my regular SKS a couple months ago, so I now only have the D). I had some of the metal 30/5 duckbill mags for the SKS, and contrary to what others have said, they worked just great for me. I actually found they were much quicker (surprisingly) to change than the AK mags in my 'D', as they kind of pivoted out around the duckbill hinge and dropped free. Also made my factory mag into a detachable one with ten minutes of dremel work and a screw... also, my "D" is much less accurate than my standard SKS was

Despite all of this, I got rid of my standard SKS, and kept the D - not quite sure why

I don't think you can go wrong with an SKS, either way.

Just because I like to see someone try this out, here is some useful info for you.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Alex

p.s. I have seen 2 sks' done this way and both work great as sks-d's.
