This is a great write up on how the SKS trigger works and how to improve it, both for performance and safety. In particular, scroll down to the section titled "Creating Positive Hammer/Sear Engagement."
After reading this, I checked out my SKS's and found that both of them had negative sear engagement, which is dangerous.
I modified my Russian one first, so it would have positive engagement. No problems. Works great.
Then I did my Chinese one, but before starting I wanted to see just how unsafe it was. I chambered a dummy round, left the safety on, and bumped the butt against the carpeted floor. IT DROPPED THE HAMMER! So I modified the sear on that one too.
Finally, I did the bump test on both of them, and they would no longer fire when bumped.
I would encourage everyone to read the guide in the link, and perform any work necessary to make your SKS a little safer. Have a gunsmith do it if you can't.
