If you look at a lot of vehicular licence plates, you'll see a combination of letters and numbers.
I believe it's simply an arbitrary arrangement where they use the letters to signify a particular production run, and the numbers are the individual units within that run.
My best guess...

Lol! Yes but what does it MEAN?

There must be a meaning behind every serial number stamped on a firearm from Russia no? Like the prefix R means the guys who refurbed the rifles wife left him or in this case the IU means I love you. ;)

The letters are there to identify information (similar to a license plate) about where and when these rifles were produced such as factory, or particular run. It would be interesting to find this information out, you should find out what they mean.

First letter indicates the month of production, second means batch "number" withing same month, then goes serial 1 to 9999, after 9999 second letter changes to next one.

Thanks, Horilka.
I figured as much.
So that would make it an October build then, eh?

Most likely May-June. I don't have a reference table for SKSs, not really my topic of interest. I just happen to know the system as the same was used on SVT-40s. Letters were not used sequentially, some were skipped, and next year same letter could be month or two off. Year could have started with A (A) or with Б (B) or even Д(D). But somewhere in the middle of the year is the best guess without reference table.

But seriously if I have this right, I believe this is an I series letter gun made in Russia. The I indicates it was manufactured in 1958.

It may have a mismatched dust cover that led you to believe it's a 1950's if it's a refurb.

Letter series Sks will have the symbol (ie backwards N) after the numerals. Letters before the numbers are just your typical Russian Sks. For example a K letter series Sks might be AT4356 K
