I have been reading up on the SKS and am interested in buying one. Correct me if I am wrong, but are there 2 types of SKS, one with fixed mag and one with detachable mag. Is this correct, if so which type feature removable mags?
 
Norinco (Chinese) made the "M" and "D" types which used AK type detachable mags.

Accessory detachable mags are available as well, that replace the standard 10 rd fixed mags, called duckbilled magazines because they look like such.
 
Most of the SKS' that are floating around at the moment are Russian. The Russian ones all have fixed mags that have been pinned to 5 rounds. Better quality from the 1950's Russians than the new Chinese ones. You can find mods for the SKS all over the web. You can leave it original or put your own personal touch to it. There are several threads in the Red Riffle section that people have posted pics of their mods.
