So I have seen these in pictures on the Internet and I have seen a few wtb ads for these i hqve not seen one in real life. what I am curious about is is there any benifit to having one or is it just for looks?

The original intention of the design, I would assume, would be for better heat dissipation for operating in hot climates. Personally I just think they look great and I've been trying to track one down for months. Hical recently had promised a shipment but unfortunately had the deal fall through.

I saw one of these in person a year ago and thought it was some sort of after market product, are they actual military issue additions?

Aftermarket. They often don't fit well.

They are awesome for when you fire corrosive ammo, because you can the toss it in the pail with all the other sooty parts for rinsing with boiling hot water.
If you have a nice wood handguard, then you must be more careful to protect the woodwork, otherwise it's just a dunkin' party.

Maybe that is the case, let's hope they've still got them in the works. There seems to be plenty of demand!
