SKS vs. CZ-858 Accuracy Question

I've read that most people can accomplish about 4" with their chinese SKS rifles using iron sights at 100 meters. I'd just like to know if the CZ-858 is just as accurate or even more so. Thanks!

My 858 shoots a little tighter than both SKS's I own. All three of them will do consistent 4" groups at 100 yards using millsurp ammo with iron sites at 100 yards.

I figure Cz 858's are probably more consistant than SKS's since they don't have the same bedding problems that SKS's do. If you have an SKS with bad bedding you can get some horrendous groups :)

I'm fortunate that my SKS (early milsurp one that I got in 1985 or so? unissued, with all the extra field parts and chest ammo pouch) shot well right out of the box. I didn't have to adjust anything and it shoots 4" at 100m no problem. I've only used Norinco ammo to date, and haven't tried any of the Czeck surplus that I recently got. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My friends who also bought SKS's from the same batch (five rifles including mine) have had the same results as I. I guess it just boils down if you get an SKS from the correct batch. My SKS is bone stock and I wouldn't sell it, very happy with it and the low cost of ammo to run it.

Several yrs ago a shooting coach from our gun club demonstrated to me just how accurate a stock SKS can be. Shooting from the kneeling position at 100m, he put 3 shots of surplus ball ammo into a group that measures just over 1". Two of the shots were touching and the third was about just 1/2" away, just the way he called it. This was a stock SKS shooting surplus ball ammo, bad trigger and all.

The CZ 858 (19" barrel from Lever Arms) is also amazingly accurate. On a recent sunny day when the target is clearly outlined, my shooting partner consistently put 5 shots of Norinco surplus ammo into 11/2" groups at 100m from the bench.

We thought the 19" barrels on the CZs are the contributing factor in the accuracy. The Marstar versions have 16" chrome plated barrels, wonder what sort of accuracy everyone is getting from those.

Its good to hear the CZ can match or even out shoot the SKS, the chinese copies of it anyways. I'm not too concerned about price, having compared an SKS to a CZ-858 but I wanted an non-restricted semi that shot cheap ammo and those were my two choices. The CZ seemed to come out on top in every category over the SKS but I wasn't sure about accuracy... I'd like to hear more about the accuracy of the two rifles.

Sounds to me like some people are getting some good accuracy out of their 858's. I wonder if it's good enough for service rifle shoots, do you think the 7.62x39 has enough oomph to keep the bullet stable up to 500 yards?

your average surplus 7.62x39, 123gr fmj leaves the muzzle at approx 2350 feet per sec (fps) , at 500yrds that bullet is only travelling at 1171fps
energy in footpounds at the muzzle is approx 1495fp, dropping to 371fp at 500yrds.
with a 200 yard zero, you are looking at an average bullet drop of 93.6 inches at 500 yards

Both the SKS, the CZ858 and other AK variants have sights that are set for their ammo's trajectory. When properly sight-in, you can use the corresponding sight settings and use a 6 o'clock aim for the distances you want to shoot.

However, bear in mind that these rifle/sights and ammo are designed for short to medium range combat purposes, while you could probably shoot better than expected at long ranges such as 500m, they are not the best for long range shooting.

Also in Service Rifle competitions such as those held at the Volkes Range in Chilliwack each year, your SKS/CZ would not be competitive against others using ARs equiped with scopes and match ammo.

However, a while ago, a friend showed up at the annual BCRA Service Rifle match with a stock M1 Garand, while he wasn't competitive, he had a ball.
