Ok, well i'm guessing that 90% of you guys know this already but I did it so i'm writing this to any of us new guys. So we got our new sks and the thing was awsome, shooting great and everything. But we noticed that the floorplate release was really tight. So I took it all apart and saw the spring on it and thought, now if I just put a looser spring on that it would release easier. And sure enough I found in one of our spring kits that was the same size as the old one with a thinner wire. So put it in there and it is just perfect, the mag floor released just fine but it wasn't going to rattle open by firing. Well it turns out that that spring is actually an integral part of the trigger mechanism. Took the sks to the range to find out that it could fire in 2 and 3 round bursts! It doesen't help that we had one of my friends along that we were introducing to the sport. It didn't scare him or anything and he understood what happened, hey it gave me an excuse to to dissassemble my sks in 15 seconds in front of him. But just for a conclusion, dont change out that spring, unless the zombies are breaking your security barrier.

Yes PLEASE don't take this as "OMG FREE FULL AUTO!!!!11!!!" Seriously, were lucky that when we pulled the trigger that the gun didn't run away on us.

Only kidding. Sorry, first thing that came to my mind. hehe...

Very dangerous indeed, especially not expecting it. At least the most we Canucks can get is 5 rds at full auto, in accidental mode.

Hmm... Do you have a non-spring firing pin? I guess you investigated that already.

Ok i'll clarify. To release the floorplate of the mag, there is that little thing that you pull back that is spring loaded. I thought it had nothing to do with the trigger it was just attached to the trigger frame, so I put a lighter spring in. but only after doing this did this double firing start to happen, so I'm pointing at that being the problem. I'm heading out to the range again on sunday for secondary results, have to work tomorrow and saturday.

The part that he is refering to is part number 11;

You know that this is the spring that controls the sear tension right?
:p
Now please re-install the orignal spring before you mave a major BOOM! on your hands.
Then take part number 10 and polish the sides smooth tell it move nice and freely but DO NOT OVER DO IT!
If you want a realy nice triger job please watch this video and if it's to hard please take it to a gun smith cause when you screw with the trigger on the sks you can injury yourself real bad.

satain is correct , the mag catch shares the same spring with the sear so with weak spring the sear werent engaging properly thus you got burst.

Looks like you need some positive sear engagement in any case.
Juster dosn't matter how much "positive sear engagement" you have.

The "positive sear engagement" is only for accidental firing. If you have a weak spring the rifle will fire normally but it will act as if you were bump firing.

Ya, thats what we figured out. Dumb decision on my part, I should have looked closer to see that the seat where that spring seats moves. To me it just looked stationary but after I noticed that it could move.

This information - especially the links to the videos posted by Satain, is
very helpful. And thanx to Outoftowner for starting this thread. I have
a couple of SKS's, and one slamfires and does the occasional double-round
burst. Those "Lone Sailor" videos make it real clear what I need to do to
fix this. I checked the worst of the two (a Chinese one), and it has the
negative sear engagement that the videos refer to. When I get time, I
will try this mod. The one point made on the video is really key - never
carry an SKS with a round in the chamber and the safety on. Bonk the
buttstock on something, (like a fencepost, as you're climbing over it)
and unmodified, it can drop the hammer and fire real easy.

ya, were not saying sks's are going to shoot off your foot or finger anytime it has the chance. But there are some rules to follow with them:
1. Don't mess around with it unless there is good instruction how to (my first mistake)
2. take care of it, it doesen't need much immediate car but simple adjustments are occasionally needed.
3. dont be stupid. lol.
