One of my buddies has a couple SKS and it seems like a pretty cheap gun to shoot plus i want to shot in this service rifle thing he goes to.

What kind of sks is the type to get.

I heard of real russians or china knockoffs.

I don't know the differnce so if someone could help me out that would be great.

Is one less problemactic then the other?

"SKS what to look for in buying one?" Ammo. Look for ammo.

Chinese are usually slightly cheaper than Russians, but both are well built. Plus you can mod it all you want and no one really cares.

For the service rifles shoots i attend they have two classes,
1 being iron sights, which is a basic stock rifle off the line as it was meant to go into the field.
and 2 open class which is what i shoot with a mod'd cz 858. just keep ur scope at 4x power and no one will care for those type of shoots.

the chinese military SKS's are nice rifles. not as nice as a good russian but alot better than the more modern produced chinese SKS's. Have a look at westrifles inventory and keep in mind they are nicer in person. As I've said before, photographing them inside does them no justice, once you see it in natural sunlight, you will be amazed. If you can swing the cash for a nice laminate stock russian, go for it. You will not be dissapointed. As far as reliability, they are machines. All of them. They eat ammo and s%$t casings all day.

Edit: I should add that they are most reliable as they come from the factory. Not all aftermarket parts are created equal, or to the same standards. Most notably is aftermarket magazines. Some install and run fine while other need alot of tweaking to feed properly. The factory hinged floorplate is an excellent design that rarely fails
