Like to upgrade sights on my sks could mount an optic but from what I see there's not much out there that seems useful. Also where the stripper clips at or should I just use a 5 round pro mag? Any help would be appreciated intened use is coyotes.

If u dont find the various magwedge styled rails, Russian side mounts or simple drill tap mounts "useful" then you should probably just go buy a WS MCR....

It's a 75 year old design aimed at meeting the needs of a very different time, if the scope mounting options that are easily available don't work for you then I'd honestly say that a 5.56 Wk-180C/WS-MCR or other more modern firearm will fit your needs much much much better.

It's not that we don't like the SKS it's just that there's only so many things you can do with it and if you've already voiced a disagreement with the commonly available mounts there isn't much more to add.

Stripper clips are widely available, and the existing magazine works just fine.

But then again, it's a 6moa rifle , if you want to hit Coyotes you're better served by a flatter shooting, more accurate rifle which is designed from the ground up to use an optic. Like the rifles I mentioned earlier.

What options have you looked at? Your best two options are the full length wartak type rails or the scout scope picatinny rail replacing the rear sight. As for strippers/mags, use and try both and see what suits you better. Everyone is different in their preferences and you don't know until you try.

I have shot many an SKS that shoots under 3 MOA with irons. Your mileage may vary.

Try one of these mounts. I know about screwing around but this is what I did with a civilian Chinese non numbered 18.5”(factory) sks. Thanks to my friend Curtton, we installed this on his living room table. It has never shifted in 3 or 5 cases worth of fun. You have to be careful as too far foreward you can’t use the clip guide. Too far aft and it’s very difficult to get the bolt back into the gun. With a scope that covers the slot, I use tapco mags. The red dot is sighted in at 50 yrds and works quite well and having the option for a scope elevates the usefulness to use lots of cheap corrosive Ammo!! I think there’s an in depth sticky produced be Curtton up top on how he (we lol)did it.

Cabelas has a Barska recvr cover mount assy w-scope that I found was good. I had to file the pic-rail of the cover to let me bring the scope back for the strippers to work but the price is good for mount & scope. I needed to bend the 'ears' of the cover to make it very snug, but it held Zero ( for an SKS) after I fiddled it. The 3-9was OK for medium range, as is an SKS. About $160 + tx.

Who as stripper clips for sale also I like the idea of mags but I'd only want 5 rounders and those seem hard to come by these days

You can make your 10 round strippers into 5 round strippers with a Zip tie and some electrical tape. Basically put 5 rds on the clip...then place zip tie with the fat head against the rounds in the groove or the clip. Make sure the 5 rounds are tight to one end (proportionate as if 10rds were on the clip)....then with the zip tie holding the rounds in tight wrap with electrical tape. leave the longer end hanging out the end of the stripper clip and or cut to length for a quick pull tab from your pouch. This works like a charm. I recommend the older Czech or Russian clips as they are made with better quality steel than the ncstar clips usually sold in packs of 10/20.

wow, that mount is still on your rifle. i enjoyed working on your rifle but a chance of screwing up a friends rifle is a bit scary. lol.

i agree, top cover mount is useless.

I know this isn't relevant to the thread I started but is there any difference between Chinese and Russian sks other than who made it and visuals. Talking more function and moa

The wartak or magwedge is the best option I've seen but it does rule out using stripper clips. I went with the wartak, and because I was bored decided to go full bubba on the SKS. It had no collector value, but as a "Chinese military" version is seemed decent. After moving into an archangel stock, cutting, crowning & threading the barrel, and adding a brake, it does a fair bit better than 3 MOA even with cheap milsurp. Barks likes hell with the brake but is a good bit of fun at the range.

See thats kinda wanna do cause I have a nice rebuilt Russian sks I don't wanna tamper with at all I might scoop a Chinese sks and Bubba it whos selling them?

I have seen a few people place the Russian PU optic and mount onto an sks. The optic is short enough that it may still allow use of stripper clips but I cant be sure. If you wanted glass on there this is probably your best option.
