So I've recently obtained my PAL and a nice late model laminate stock Tula SKS.

Thanks to the threads here I did my first field strip to de-cosmoline it and I have to say, wow. That was easy! Had it fully apart in maybe 10 minutes.

I'd only had limited experience with a basic strip of a C7, Enfield and Anschütz in my Cadet days so I wasn't totally out to lunch but it was surprising that it came apart with no difficulties.

Looking forward to finishing a deep clean of the metal bits and taking it to the Range this weekend to see how it performs! Already planning to add another Red rifle to my case. ;)

My son and I picked up a refurb SKS from CT.

We stripped the stock did the tung oil thing, and added a muzzle brake, bipod, buttstock pad, and detachable mag.

Into it for less than 300.00.

Great rifles! Just don't fall into the money pit of aftermarket "tactical" accessories. ;)

Oh jeezus no. I may get a buttstock pad if the kick is too much but other than that I love the way it is.

randyhub - That stock looks mint! Where'd you get the bipod at? That's one accessory I wouldn't mind.

No kick the stock was a little short for my son, plus the metal buttplate was slippery when standing her up.

The bayonet was never used the bipod was more comfy when shooting on the ground, got it off Ebay.

We love plinking with it, shoots great, it was a refurb Tula.

This one appears to be a late model refurb Tula as well. Everything matches but the magazine.

DILLIGAF - I've fired .22, .308, 12Ga and some Black Powder so I'm not really sure what to expect from this cartridge. Probably something in the middle?

I got the archangel stock on sale for 160$ for one of my shooters because the original stock had lots of wobble, I have a bunch of SKS's in stock configuration tho.

Not bad at all! Some other folks were at the range with .30-06 and some 300WM those sounded like a bigger thump than the SKS. hah

For the first time shooting in over 10 years... My first target of the day on the left and the last of the day on the right. I'm certainly not complaining about that at 50m.

Far less than a .308 or 12ga. It's an "oversized" pistol round, or an "undersized" rifle round. My 44mag model 1892 recoils more than a my VZ.58 or any SKS I've shot.

Plus the SKS and VZ58 are gas operated, which reduces recoil, whereas a levergun gives you the full recoil.
