For the first time in years, I never got to throw any lead at all. I shouldn't complain as I've normally been lucky, but this year the gods conspired against me. It was absolutely the WORST year for weather I've ever seen. We expect to lose a few days to weather, but out of 13 days, we had 5 -1/2 decent hunting days. We were hunting WMU 56 and I got eyes on a buck on the first Monday, but I couldn't get a clean shot and the same again on the Thursday. We came back to the city and headed out again on Wednesday of the second week. We never saw a damned thing. On our last day of hunting (Saturday), I put my brother in a good location with his self-climbing tree stand and I did a push through an adjacent property to which we have hunting rights. To make a long story short, I pushed out a nice 6 point buck into my brother's fire lane, and he nailed it so we have venison in the freezer.
I'm a member at the CFB Borden Rod & Gun, so I went out for the Dec. controlled hunt which is a Mon. to Fri. hunt. On the first day, I was sitting on my watch and I hear a deer coming. My heart is going pit-a-pat and the shotgun is up and ready. My partner gets cold feet (literally) and decides to go back to his vehicle to change footwear. You guessed it! The deer heard him and all I saw was the flag and the butt end of the deer bounding off into the woods. I saw a big doe on the Wednesday, but she was just bounding away and barking so no joy there. On the Thursday, I was put on a good watch and several hours later I heard something big crashing through the bush and coming right to me. The wind is in my face, my shotgun is up and ready, and whatever it was decides to stop and check out the area. I heard in the bush but it wouldn't come out into a fire lane and that was how it stood until last light.
So, did I love being in the bush? Absolutely! I am a little disappointed that I never even got a shot off, but that's hunting, isn't it? Here's a pic of the one deer we took with my push and his shot. I hope many of you did better than us.
